User talk:Essjay/Top/Did you...

In respect to your serious ass-kicking skills, you get this barnstar of takedowns. Snoutwood (talk) 03:56, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Essjay. I really hate to do this, and I know you're busy, and thanks for all your great CU work, but what exactly is the story with this one? I don't really get what happened: it's in the completed section of RFCU, but I don't know the result. Could you just give me an idea of what's happening?

Sorry, and thanks. Snoutwood (talk) 22:15, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's a huge request, and I've been working on it a little bit at a time. I put it in the complete section so another checkuser wouldn't end up duplicating work I was already doing. I'll get back on it shortly. Essjay (TalkConnect) 22:39, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
O.K., great. Thanks for that. Snoutwood (talk) 23:39, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't fucking believe it. I can't believe you've already cleared that out. Essjay, you kick serious, serious ass. You get the beating-the-shit-out-of-everybody award. I'd give you a barnstar, but your insanely mad skills trump everything that those wimpy pentagrams have to offer. Thanks a million, you MAJORLY FUCKING ROCK. HOOAH! Snoutwood (talk) 03:56, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

:D Thanks! Now I need Acetic Acid to turn up and award me a pin so I can pop this big head I'm getting! Essjay (TalkConnect) 05:46, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I, Titoxd, hereby award you, Essjay, a bunch of pins to pop your head those vandals that keep trying to destroy Wikipedia every single day. Titoxd(?!? - help us) 05:51, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CheckUser to clear wikipedian

Hi Essjay, A wikipedian, User:HolyRomanEmperor, has been accused of being engaged on sockpuppetry by another user, User:Hipi Zhdripi (who has been blocked for disruption and sockpuppetry himself). HolyRomanEmperor has become very upset[1] by this slandering campaign [2][3][4] and he would like to request a self-checkuser upon himself to prove that he has never been engaged on sockpuppetry. I do not know whether this is possible. Please advise. Regards, E Asterion u talking to me? 14:56, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is possible, but because there are ways of avoiding detection, self-requested checks are inherently inconclusive, and tend to be looked upon dimly. I suppose it's seen something like "Yeah, go ahead and check, I know you won't find anything because I made sure to cover my tracks." Checkuser, as David Gerard says, is not magic wiki pixie dust, and is never the be-all-end-all of evidence; it's the similarity in edit pattern and interests that confirms sockpuppetry, checkuser just helps confirm or refute what is already known.
If HRE wants to request a check, we can perform it, but he should be aware that it is not guaranteed to produce any result, and is not a guarantee of being cleared. Essjay (TalkConnect) 04:54, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You don't understand - he was blocked indefinately twice (first time for threating to kill my paronts, destroy my house and kill all Serbs and the second time for being the key reason of my RfA's failure); and both times I had him unblocked. He has been accusing me of sockpuppetry for a thousand times (just see the history of my User page - you'll see numerious tags over there). According to him, I've had at least 10 sockpuppets by now - and we have his sockpuppets proven by CheckUser and blocked. I'm getting really desperate here - not knowing what else to do to stop him, so go ahead - conduct a CheckUser. I've got no idea what else might do (talking didnt work - not in English, Serbian, Serbo-Croatian, Albanian or German). I'm simply running out of ideas over here. --HolyRomanEmperor 14:16, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm simply pointing out the likely reception of the results of such a check. It generally tends to be the case, and I speak from experience here, that people don't accept an inconclusive or "no-connection" result from a self-requested checkuser because they assume the person who requested it has used techincal means to avoid detection, and knows that the checkuser won't show anything. I'm happy to run it, I just don't want you to expect that it will solve anything, because it probably won't: We can't force people to believe things they don't want to believe. More indications of sockpuppetry

Hi Essjay, could you please check this report on a suspicious user like you did previously. Seems like back then you could not cover all suspected sockpuppets or meatpuppets. ilir_pz 00:44, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Saint" image

Greetings Essjay, thanks for the explanation for the revert. Dewikifying that Catholic bit is all that the doctor ordered on that. Cheers. Netscott 23:33, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Back as a bureaucrat

Thanks for the welcome - I've never really been away, but I tend to do less when others are chomping at the bit, and more when a backlog builds up. The last couple of RfAs I've closed have not resulted in promotion, so I suppose I've been less visible lately. Anyway, good work on your part, and I'll see you around in future. Blnguyen RfA

Thankyou Essjay for doing the honours and keeping RfA running smoothly. I am rather stunned, flabbergasted and honoured by the community support, and I guess I have a lot to live up to now after the expectations of the community hav been set so high. I am looking forward to testing out the shiny new buttons soon. Thankyou. Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 03:13, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're quite welcome! If you have any questions, let one of us know, we'll be happy to offer advice. Essjay (TalkConnect) 03:14, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bot

It should not add duplicates, but it does for some reason. I'll look at the code again, though it may drop another post here, so get ready :D. I want to make it so that it only puts one for each article....OHHHH...I was using +newsection, so the text check failed. I see why its not working. Sorry for the doubles :(.Voice-of-AllTalk 05:55, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BOT - Regarding your recent protection of Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Blnguyen:

You recently protected[5] this page but did not put in a summary. If this is an actual (not deleted) article, article talk, or project page, make sure that it is listed on WP:PP. Please be sure to put in summaries when you protect articles. Thanks. VoABot 06:03, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grrr...wp.sumary value is not there, rejusting title.Voice-of-AllTalk 06:06, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, How did you get to be an admin practically everywhere? I would like to become a Commons admin at least, how should I go about doing that?Voice-of-AllTalk
I paid off Jimbo...No, er, wait! In general, becoming a Commons admin isn't too difficult; you just need to have been a part of the community for a while, and be familiar with Commons policy, etc. It's not as tough as RfA here; a couple hundred edits and a demonstration that you intend to do something with the tools is for the most part all that is required. Essjay (TalkConnect) 06:37, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Thanks for the Check User, you've helped a problem. Highway Rainbow Sneakers 06:43, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

school ip blocked

my school ip is blocked - i don't even think we can load wikipedia! I regret this very much. Is there not a way that at least my account can access wikipedia? It's been very hard to edit with the block. Thanks. JamieJones talk 21:46, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blocks don't effect the ability to read Wikipedia; it is simply not technically possible for them to. If you are unable to load Wikipedia at all, it is because it is being filtered on your end, not because of a block on this end. There is not currently a way to allow selective unblocking; my advice would be for you and anyone else in a similar situation to make known to the developers your feelings, as I've gotten the impression they don't think anyone really cares. RfA

Hey Essjay, could you close AmiDaniel's RfA? Thanks, Prodego talk 02:02, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm working through them right now. Essjay (TalkConnect) 02:11, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I don't know how you handle the huge amount of work you do. Great, great work. Prodego talk 02:13, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Congratulations!

Thank you, Essjay, for all my shiny new buttons! If I have questions about how to use them, I'll probably ask someone like User:Prodego, just because I don't want to take time away from all of the other hard work you do you as a sysop, bureaucrat, and checkuser (I fail to understand how you have time to do everything you do, but it is very much appreciated!), but thank you for the offer. Thanks again! AmiDaniel (talk) 02:25, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, and feel free to ask, I still have time for questions! Essjay (TalkConnect) 02:27, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You need to apply tools carefully.

Was this really the right thing to do:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia%3AArticles_for_deletion%2FIsraeli_apartheid_%28phrase%29&diff=55898998&oldid=55898511

Please verify. I am harrsed by an admin who apply blocks to intimidate me. Don't jump on his banned-wagon..... Zeq 11:26, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Latin Wikibooks

Hi, I'm Dbmag9.

I see that you have an account on Wikibooks in Latin. I have recently been made an administrator there until the 31 July, and I'm trying to make the project into something useful. If you have time/motivation, please go there, and try to make a useful contribution. Any questions/comments/replies can be made on my talk page.

Thank you! -b:la:Usor:Dbmag9

RFI

Could you explain how I can get one of those fancy sigs? --Folajimi 17:22, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE:IRC

Greetings, friend. There's appear to be an increasing divergence —and discrapency— between many of those who regularly frequent IRC and the community at large. As one of the people who holds power in that medium, how valid do you find my observation, esp. in relation to the latest WR/Brandt/etc. saga? Looking forward to your thoughts. All the best, El_C 22:15, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
