Mariusz Pudzianowski (born on April 23, 1977 in Biała Rawska, Poland) is a leading strongman competitor. His name is pronounced [mar-yoosh pooj-ya-nov-skee]. He is sometimes known by the nicknames Pudzian, Dominator, and Pyton.
Strongman career
Mariusz began competing in strength sports at age 16, in December, 1990, when he entered his first national bench press competition and pressed 160 kg (353 lb). Two years later, Mariusz improved his performance to 205 kg (452 lb).
On May 1, 1999 Mariusz entered his first Strongman competition, which was held in Płock, Poland. He achieved his first major success at the international level in 2001 when he finished fourth in his first World's Strongest Man competition. He returned to win the WSM contest in 2002, and retained his title in 2003 by the biggest margin ever achieved in the competition. In March, 2004 he also became the IFSA Strongman Super Series World Champion. He finished third in the WSM contest in 2004, then won the title for a third time in 2005.
Pudzianowski was later disqualified from the 2004 World's Strongest Man contest "for a breach of the new IFSA Strongman Health Policy." He was forced to return his prize money, stripped of the IFSA points from the event, and received a one year ban from competition. Pudzianowski did not dispute his banned substance violation and waived his right to have his B sample verified.
Background
Aside from being a world-class strength athlete, Mariusz maintains his agility, conditioning, and general physical preparedness through other athletic endeavors. He is an exponent of Kyokushin karate (fourth kyu), which he has been practicing since the age of 11. He was also a competitive boxer for seven years, three of which were spent in the Kosedowski League. Mariusz is a favorite in every Strongman competition he enters, having been defeated only twice in Poland through 2002, and his worst placing being a respectable second. Recently he has won the 2005 Met-Rx World's Strongest Man, for the third time, making him one of the most dominant strong men of all times.
Unlike some strongmen, Mariusz retains a very low body fat percentage which helps him with his speed and endurance. Mariusz is a national hero and is considered a superstar in his country.
