Shenendehowa High School is located in Clifton Park, New York, a suburb 17 miles north of Albany, NY. The school is well known in the area for both academics and athletics, and for its large size. The school nickname is the Plainsmen (mainly used in athletics), its mascot is the stallion, and the school colors are green and white. Each school in the Shenendehowa Central School District is named after Native American words or phrases with academic themes. The name Shenendehowa means "the great plains".

Currently, there are two buildings for the high school: the East building was the original high school, and the West building, which was formally Koda Junior High, now houses high school freshmen.

School History

In the late 1970's, Shenendehowa High School adopted an open campus policy where students could leave the school building and grounds during lunch or study hall periods. The policy eventually came under scrutiny when numerous sexual encounters and pregnancies were reported to have occurred in the school's parking lot and surrounding wooded areas. Years later, three students were killed in a car crash while rushing back to class. The school then recinded its open campus policy.[1]

In the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, the sale and abuse of illegal drugs (such as marijuana and LSD) ran rampant throughout the junior and senior high schools. Administration and faculty were criticized when they responded to the sale of illegal drugs by increasing and tightening hallway monitoring.[1]

In 1989, an emotionally troubled student brandished a shotgun in the halls and cafeteria of the school. In 1990, two students were arrested after they severely beat and hospitalized a varsity athlete. In 1991, principal Ed Curran was arrested in Clifton Park for driving while intoxicated and his wife was cited for assaulting an officer. In 1992, pipe bombs were set off in several second floor hallway lockers. In 1993, a pornographic film was displayed on the cafeteria television displays. In 1994, a former student burglarized the school at night, stealing electronic equipment and musical instruments. In 2002, a bathroom's towel dispenser was set on fire. In 2005, a knife was brought to school by a student, but not used. Since 2002, there have been numerous bomb threats. Arrests were made. In 2006 there was a outbreak of syphilus, no offcial reports were made but many students in high school west new about it and possibly up to 10 contracted the STD.[1], but the threats continue.[1]

Also, some lucky numbers hav witnessed sightings of a super hero by the name of gian carpino. this sixth grader that attends acadia middle school may not look like much, but looks are deceiving these days. when people hav been doing drugs in school, gian is there in no time. although he looks overweight, slower than a turtle, and pleseantly plump, he sprints to the sight of the drugging up and puts in the hardest tackel around to them. he always wanted to be a football player, he was to slow to make the team so his tackles are used in this action. so whenever u need help with drugs or need help cleaning ur plate, call gian carpino, and hell be ther on the double.
