Maggie Sawyer is a character in DC Comics, who has been a supporting character in both Superman and Batman titles.

She was introduced in Superman vol 2 #7 (April, 1987), as Captain Sawyer of the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit, a branch of the police force which focussed on supervillains, essentially replacing Inspector Henderson from the previous continuity as Superman's police contact.

Later stories revealed that she came from Star City, and had been married to another police officer until she realised she was gay. They have a daughter, Jamie. Since her divorce Sawyer has been in a relationship with Toby Raines, a reporter for the Metropolis Star.

She had a close working relationship with Inspector Dan Turpin, the second-in-command of the SCU. Henderson, however, resented the fact that she gave orders to officers who outranked her and, when he became Comissioner following the Death of Superman storyline, did something about it... by promoting her to Inspector.

Inspector Sawyer was the main character in the 1998 comics mini-series Metropolis SCU.

She has recently transferred to Gotham City, and is a significant character in the comic Gotham Central.
