A Top 10 list is a generic term used to indicate a list of items, usually ten in number, which are considered to be best, worst, or notable in some other way. The lists are usually written, or read out, in reverse order starting with Number 10 and finishing with ...and The Number 1....

Top 10 lists are a regular segment of the Television Show The Late Show with David Letterman, as they were on Letterman's NBC show Late Night with David Letterman.

Top 10 lists were not originally a regular segment of the show, but they were added as a way of mocking People Magazine, which routinely featured such lists (as well as 'Worst 10' lists). David Letterman had made an off-hand remark on his show that he found the lists to be annoying, and began his own lists as a way of ridiculing what had by then become an increasingly recurring trend in other periodicals and magazines. Ironically, the satirical Letterman Top 10 lists had become so popular that they became a signature feature of the show, and were even released for sale in books.

The lists were usually given humorous titles such as Top Ten Signs Your Kid Had A Bad First Day At School or Top Ten Rejected James Bond Gadgets. Often the lists were based on topics from the news and contemporary pop culture. A drumroll often accompanies the reading of the list. Sometimes a guest, or guests, would appear to read the list or act it out in some way.
