NewS (NEWS) is a J-pop group from Johnny & Associates, which also produced groups such as SMAP, TOKIO, Kinki Kids and Tackey & Tsubasa.

NEWS is often noted for having five consecutive #1 singles on the Oricon weekly rankings.


History

  • September 2003: Nine Johnny's Juniors were picked to form NEWS.
  • November 7, 2003: First single release, NEWS Nippon. This was a limited release, available only at 7-11 stores (corresponding to the release date of Nov 7) as the 2003 volleyball championships official song.
  • December 2003: Moriuchi Takahiro (森内貴寛) left NEWS and Johnny's Entertainment, leaving the current eight members.
  • May 12, 2004: Major debut single, Kibou ~Yell~. Ranks in at #1 on the Oricon Charts.
  • May 2006: NEWS is suspended for the rest of the year due to temporary suspension of 2 members (Uchi Hiroki in July 2005 & Kusano Hironori in January 2006). Members that are not related to the scandals will be allowed to carry on with their solo activities, but no group activities will be carried on during this period until further notice.
  • The name NEWS is derived from the four global directions North, East, West and South.

  • Nishikido Ryo (錦戸亮), usually referred to as "Ryo, Ryo-chan, Ryotan or Nishikido-kun" born November 3, 1984
  • Uchi Hiroki (内博貴), usually referred to as "Hiro, Uchi or Uchi-kun or some random name by best friend, Ryo" born September 10, 1986
  • Koyama Keiichiro (小山慶一郎), usually referred to as "Koyama, Keii (by fans), Kei-chan(by fans)" born May 1, 1984
  • Masuda Takahisa (増田貴久), usually referred to as "Massu, Bu-chan, Masuda-kun" born July 4, 1986
  • Kato Shigeaki (加藤成亮), usually referred to as "Shigeaki, Shige, Kato-kun" born July 11, 1987
  • Tegoshi Yuya (手越祐也), usually referred to as "Tegoshi, Tegorin, Teshi" born November 11, 1987
  • Kusano Hironori (草野博紀), usually referred to as "Kusano, Notti or Kusano-kun, Hiro" born February 15, 1988

Nishikido Ryo and Uchi Hiroki are also members of Kanjani8

Koyama Keiichiro, Kusano Hironori, and Kato Shigeaki were called KKKity before becoming members of of NewS.

Yamashita Tomohisa was a part of the popular junior group called 4Tops.
