Peter I Island (also called Peter I Øy) was discovered on 21 January 1821 by Fabian von Bellingshausen. It was then named after the Russian Czar Peter the Great. The first successful landing was made on 2 February 1929 by Ola Olstad claiming it for Norway.

The Islands highest point is Lars Christensen Peak measuring 1755 metres.
