Buster
Buster is a crash test dummy used in many of the more dangerous myth tests. As a testament to the danger of the tests in which he is used, Buster has had to be extensively repaired and rebuilt over the course of the series. He has also had to be modified to fit specialized equipment or give him new functionality; For the purpose of testing the "Hammer Bridge Drop" myth, he was fitted with an accelerometer, while in the Shark Week special, he was temporarily modified to allow him to punch sharks.
After the "Ming Dynasty Astronaut" myth, Buster was rebuilt as "Buster 2.0". Retaining only the original head, hands, and feet, an entirely new body was built. Designed to better represent how a human would be injured, yet be easier to repair than the original Buster, Buster 2.0 uses more realistic joints, with a greater range of movement, and has easily replaceable wooden "bones", designed to break at the same force as the average human bone. In addition, he has molded fire-proof flesh made of special "Dragon-Skin" silicone, to give him a more human appearance. Since the original rebuild, Buster's continued injuries seem to have lead to the replacing of his head, though his face remains.
Guests
Sometimes specialists or noteworthy guests are included in the testing of myths. A few of them are listed below.
- Eric Gates: Rocketry Expert - (JATO Chevy, Ming Dynasty Astronaut, Swingset 360, Confederate Rocket revisit) Eric provided rockets and rocketry assistance in several myths, starting with the Jet Assisted Take-Off Chevy Impala legend.
- Lester Apple: Elevator Repairman - (Elevator of Death) Jamie and Adam sought Lester's advice on elevators when testing the Elevator of Death myth. His advice for someone trapped in a falling elevator was to lie flat on the floor.
- Jack Morocco: Pyrotechnician - (Tree Cannon, The Mad Trombonist, Concrete Dynamite) Jack provided the MythBusters with Cherry Bombs and other explosives while they tested as well as explosives expertise.
- Frank Doyle: Retired FBI agent - (Concrete Dynamite, Exploding Pants, Car Capers Revisit) Frank assisted beyond Jack Morocco's help by loading the cement truck with 850 pounds of blasting agent to aid in its destruction. While revisiting the "Car Capers" myth of shooting a gas tank to explode it, he also provided normally-banned tracer ammunition for retesting the myth.
- Dr. Roger Schwenke: Acoustician for Meyer Sound: - (Duck Quack Echo, Brown Note, Voice Breaking Glass) - Dr. Schwenke is called an Honorary Mythbuster by Adam in the "Breaking Glass" myth. He found that duck quacks do echo, busted the Brown note myth, and found out how to shatter a glass using sound alone.
- Jaime Vendera: Vocal Coach - (Breaking Glass) Jaime helped Adam and Jamie (Hyneman) confirm the Breaking Glass myth. He is the first documented person to break a glass using his unamplified voice alone.
- Jim Long: Pro Archer - (Robin Hood Split Arrow revisit) Jim could consistantly hit the nock of the target arrow, but cedar arrows would not split. When the cedar arrow was replaced with bamboo, Jim split the full length of the shaft on his first try.
- "Cadillac Ben": Ben donated "Earl," the car used in the "Car Capers" myth series, the "Beat the Police Radar" myths, and (as a test weight) the "Boom Lift Catapult" myth. The final test in the Car Capers series, "shooting a gas tank," failed to destroy the donated Cadillac. The MythBusters promised Ben a demolished car so they used the same vehicle and dropped it off a 60 foot crane to test the resiliance of the newly rebuilt Buster.
