The mullet is a type of haircut, associated since the 1970s with ice hockey players (whence hockey hair) and United States. It appears about 1-2 inches short on top, and 12 inches or more at the back. The Beastie Boys are purported to have coined this word usage, but it appears as early as 1967 in the film Cool Hand Luke, in which a long-haired southern man is referred to as a "mullet head". In Britain, paralleling the American meme, the mullet is popularly associated with Central and Eastern Europeans, particularly professional footballers.

The mullet was one of the defining images of the 1980s. Movies like The Wedding Singer (1998) use the mullet to show they are set in the 1980s. However, some say that the mullet is making a comeback.
