Gamergate refers to a 2014 video game controversy focused on video game journalism, journalistic ethics and misogyny. [1][2] The name is derives from the Watergate Scandal. The basis of the controversy was the initial release of sensitive private and personal information of video game developer Zoe Quinn and her perceived relationship with video game journalists from Kotaku and similar organisations, and subsequently expanded to include the feminist media critic Anita Sarkeesian, game developer Phil Fish and critique of the pejorative use of the phrase "Social Justice Warrior".[3][4][5]
Harrassment of Quinn and death threats of Sarkeesian prompted an open letter to the gaming community by independent game developer Andreas Zecher, who called upon the community to take a public stand against the attacks. The letter subsequently attracted the signatures of more than 2000 professionals within the gaming industry.[6]
