- The asteroid 4179 Toutatis passes within four lunar distances of the Earth on September 29, 2004. The asteroid is the largest known that has ever passed this close to Earth.
- North Korea confirms at the UN General Assembly that it has created nuclear weapons from spent fuel rods.
- The death toll in the Haitian city of Gonaïves is likely to pass 2,000 following the flooding rains and mudslides caused by Hurricane Jeanne on September 18. Jeanne also left hundreds missing and 300,000 homeless.
