Lloyd Doggett

Lloyd Alton Doggett (born October 6, 1946), American politician, has been the Democratic congressman representing the Texas 10th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1995.

Born in Austin, Texas, Doggett recieved both his bachelor's degree in business and law degree from the University of Texas at Austin. His political career began in 1973, when he was elected to the Texas State Senate, serving until 1985. Later in 1989 he became both a justice on the Texas Supreme Court and an adjunct professor at the University of Texas Law School, his alma mater.

He was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1994. Running for re-election in 1996, Congressman Doggett defeated a peculiar challenger in Republican Teresa Doggett, to whom he is no relation. In the years following his first re-election, Doggett would consistantly win around 85% of the vote, facing only Libertarian opponents. Redistricting by the Texas Legislature in 2003 caused him to seek re-election in the newly redrawn 25th congressional district.

He is a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, where he serves on the Health Subcommittee, and the Select Revenue Measures Subcommittee.
