W.I.T.C.H. is a French animated elemental television series based on the Italian comic book series of the same name with a manga-inspired art style. Like the comics, the series follows five ordinary girls: Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia and Hay Lin, who are all given magical powers and become the Guardians of the Veil. They must save Meridian from the evil Phobos and Cedric who are searching for Phobos' sister who is the long lost princess of Meridian. It is later revealed the princess is Cornelia's best friend Elyon. The Guardians are helped by Caleb, a heroic soldier who leads the rebellion against Phobos; Blunk, a frog-like goblin creature who is a smuggler/dealer who takes things from the human world to Meridian (vice-versa) and mistakening them for other things and trading them for food or money; Vathek, an ex-guard of Phobos; and Yan-Lin, Hay Lin's goofy grandmother who was once one of the previous Guardians. 30 episodes have been aired so far.

W.I.T.C.H. airs on Jetix (Which airs on both ABC Family & Toon Disney in the US), CBBC, The Family Channel and on France 3 but it is possible other networks can begin to air the show. In the US Disney Channel & ABC Kids used to air the series but they have removed the show from its schedule & website. It was reported that Sip Animation will complete full production of W.I.T.C.H. Season 2 around September of 2006, but that it will premiere in the States, Canada, and The UK in spring of '06.

'It Begins' : On a rainy day in Heatherfield, four ordinary girls (Irma, Taranee, Cornelia, Hay Lin) at a science fair who are constantly bugged by Uriah and Prinicipal Knickerbocker, meet Will, a new girl who has just moved to Heatherfield with her mom, Susan. Hay Lin invites all the girls over to her place for an after school snack when her grandma, Yan Lin tells them the story of Meridian and how they must use the elemental powers of Water, Fire, Earth and Air to become the Guardians of the Veil. Will becomes the Keeper of the Heart of Candracar which closes portals and activates their powers, Irma gains water power, Taranee gains fire power, Cornelia gains earth power, and Hay Lin gains air power. Meanwhile in Meridian, Phobos and Cedric chase Caleb and Aldarn, the rebel leaders who have attacked the castle. While Aldarn goes to the Infinite City, Caleb takes a portal to Earth, where he is captured by Cedric, right in front of the girls who were practicing their powers!

'It Resumes' : Vathek, Phobos and Cedric put Will and Caleb in a dungeon once they are captured. There they meet, Blunk, a Passling. Meanwhile, the other girls find a portal and go to Meridian to save their comrades. However this will not be easy when they can't transform with Will captured and they have to deal with a vicious Gargoyle!

'The Key' : A guard named Raythor gets suspicious of Vathek, the guard that captured Caleb because the key to his cell has mysteriously disappeared. When Caleb discovers that Blunk found the key and took it to Earth, the guardians, him, Blunk and Aldarn have to take it back to the castle before Raythor, Phobos or Cedric discover Vathek is a spy for the rebel army.

'Happy Birthday, Will' : It's Will's birthday and if there's one thing she doesn't want, it's a party. The girls manage to throw one anyway and everything is going swimmingly until one of those Meridian fang-faces shows at City Hall looking for birth certificates for a certain teenage girl. Apparently, the current Prince of Meridian has a long lost sister...

'A Service to the Community' : While helping out in Community Service Day, Will and Hay Lin find a strange Meridian graffiti which The Mage identifies as belonging to a Beast, living in Heatherfield in human form. Will suspects her History teacher, Professor Collins, and the girls immediately formulate a plot to force the suspected monster into revealing his true form.

'The Labyrinth' : The students at Shetfield get their midterms back. To study better, the girls go to Cedric's new bookshop, where Cedric is in the disguise of a human bookseller named Ric Hoffman. However, they are suddenly transported into a huge maze in Meridian which turns out to be: Phobos' library! However, even if they escape, they will have to deal with Phobos' most powerful minion: The Tracker!

'Divide and Conquer' : The W.I.T.C.H. girls go on a school skiing trip to show up Swiss exchange-student vamp Sondra, who seems to have mesmerized all the boys at Sheffield. Little do they know that Phobos wants to take advantage of this trip to divide them and separate the other four Guardians from Will and the Heart of Kandrakar, the only thing that can activate their full powers.

'Ambush At Torus Filney' : Tired of having their supply lines constantly ambushed by Caleb and Aldarn, Phobos and Cedric start a rumor that the Seal of Phobos has been discovered. This leads to the rebels being ambushed at Torus Filney thanks to Vathek accidently hearing this. Now it is up to the girls to save Caleb and his men. But it won't be too easy: not only are the girls in a play and have to use Astral Drops to cover for them, but they will find themselves against a moving blob of sand: Sandpit.

'Return of the Tracker' : Prince Phobos sends the Tracker after Caleb in an effort to recapture the rebel leader. Meanwhile, the girls all try to go see a movie starring their favorite actor. But will they be able to save Caleb and defeat an old foe and get to the show on time?

'Framed' : While at the Art Museum trying to capture the feeling of the middle ages for their school carnival, Will, Taranee, Cornelia, and Hay Lin get sucked into the painting they are studying. Unbeknowst to the girls, Phobos knows they are trapped in the painting and sends Frost the Hunter after them, but the girls escape with the help of Elias Van Daal, the imprisoned artist of the painting. Meanwhile, Irma, Caleb and Blunk have to stall for time at the Medieval Carnival and figure out how to get the girls back to Heatherfield. Anachronistic heck breaks loose when Cedric and his goon platoon enter the painting to get the Heart of Candracar and girls have to paint like mad to get away. Irma and Caleb rescue the girls from the painting and manage to salvage the school carnival thanks to the number of people they brought back with them from the painting.

'The Stone of Threbe' : While the girls try to give Blunk a bath, Phobos finds the Stone of Threbe, a powerful stone used to locate Elyon's ancestor. Cedric hangs this up in his bookshop: and Elyon is attracted to it! Then it is just 2 things: Elyon is Phobos' sister and princess of Meridian, and the girls can't power down from their guardian state.

'The Princess Revealed' : Elyon is Phobos's sister and the true heir to the throne of Meridian, she just doesn't know it yet. Vathek overhears Phobos and Cedric's plans for capturing her and hurries to tell Caleb only to end up running for his life when Cedric comes to stop him. Vathek and Blunk escape to Earth with Cedric and a worm-looking monster hot on their heels. Vathek relates the news to Caleb who relates the news to the Guardians and they go after Elyon to keep her safe from Cedric's clutches, however, they have to hold off the Larvek from eating Vathek and Elyon slips off in a bad mood after her new beau gives her the heave-ho. She heads back to her place of comfort: Cedric's bookshop.

'Stop the Presses' : Phobos is preparing the Ritual of Amalgamation. He needs symbols of Elyon's body, mind, and spirit. Cedric takes her hairbrush, A+ math test, and is trying to take her breath. Meanwhile, Martin catches a glimpse of a Hermeneuta beast from Meridian and the only thing that will get him away long enough for the girls to send it back home is a date with Irma. Catching the little beast is not as easy as it sounds, especially when the mom shows up. In the end, Cedric finally captures Elyon's breath in a balloon and all that's left is to take her to Meridian.

'Parent's Night' : It's parents' night at the school, and nobody (except Hay Lin) seems very excited, especially Elyon. She feels that Cedric is the only one who understands her, not her friends, and especially not her family. When Elyon does her family tree research, her parents do not have any pictures of her other relatives. Elyon thinks that it's because they don't care about her but it's for a whole other reason. Cedric reveals to Elyon, that her parents are beasts, and that she is the Princess of Meridian. Elyon is so confused but she goes to Meridian, her original home.

'The Mudslugs' : Elyon seems to have adjusted to her new life as the Princess of Meridian, living in Phobos' castle, although she is still under the illusion that Phobos has created. Meanwhile, Cornelia gets so upset about losing Elyon to Cedric and Phobos that she quits being the Earth Guardian. Phobos uses this to his advantage to pull a 'divide and conquer' move on Will, Irma, Taranee and Hay Lin.

'Walk This Way' : The school dance is coming up, and all the girls are excited. Especially Will, who hopes to go with Matt. Matt says yes, not surprisingly, but before the dance can start, a strange horn finds its way to Heatherfield. If you hear it, you do whatever the owner tells you to do. Cedric is the owner in this case, and the girls must stop him. But how can they win if they have to fight the innocent people of Heatherfield, not to mention Hay Lin?

'Ghosts of Elyon' : Will and the rest of the girls try to tell Elyon the truth about Phobos and Meridian, but that becomes very hard when Phobos teaches his sister to make ghostly images of herself to confuse her former friends and the rebels. The real Elyon is upset that she didn’t bring her sketchbook from Earth so Phobos sends Lurdens through a portal to her old bedroom to fetch it. But the creatures also trash a stash of chocolate, the scent from which Blunk is able to follow to Phobos’s and Elyon’s secret Meridian mountain hideout. The Guardians and Caleb search for Elyon under the mountain but are ambushed by Lurdens. Forced into the open, they battle Cedric on the mountainside before returning to Earth, no closer to warning Elyon of the terrible danger she’s in.This is also the episode which exposes Cornelia and Caleb's heartache

'The Mogriffs' : Phobos sends shapeshifting monsters into Meridian to pose as and discredit the Guardians so Elyon will lose what little trust she has left in her friends. While the real Guardians do battle with the evil twins, Cornelia and Caleb try to persuade Elyon that Phobos only wants her for her power, but she won't listen, especially when she makes a new friend: Miranda, Phobos' shapeshifting minion. Caleb, however, does something to shake Elyon's faith in her new brother: he bows to her. Unnerved by this, Elyon is starting to suspect that Phobos is not telling her everything.

'The Underwater Mines' : An astonished Caleb discovers that his father is not dead, as he had suspected, but trapped in Phobos's underwater mine! Caleb must enlist the aid of the guardians to save his father and the other rebels. But a spy, Jeek, alerts Phobos, who sends Cedric to stop the rescue. Can the guardians save Caleb's father before it's too late?

'The Seal of Phobos' : The Guardians are stunned to learn that their math teacher Mrs. Rudolph is the Meridianite nanny who brought Elyon to Earth twelve years ago. She opened a portal with the Seal Of Phobos... but lost it during the escape. On the run from castle guards, Caleb and Blunk split up. Blunk hides in a sewer where he finds The Seal where it has lain undiscovered for twelve years. Not knowing what he has, Blunk begins waving the Seal around, opening portals all over Heatherfield, which the Guardians rush to close. But the girls don’t realize that every time they do, they’re cutting off an escape route Caleb needs to avoid capture... Caleb kisses Cornelia on the cheek before he goes to battle.

'Escape From Cavigor' : Caleb learns that Elyon’s parents, the Browns, are being held in the forbidding underground prison at Cavigor. He and the Guardians plot a difficult escape; while a distraction from above draws guards upwards, Cornelia will tunnel in from the Infinite City below. But one slip and Phobos will discover the rebels’ secret subterranean hideout...

'Caleb's Challenge' : When Caleb's best friend, Aldarn, accidentally becomes hypnotized by Elyon into signing a peace treaty, Caleb has to fight him for the position of leader. Meanwhile, after leaving their baking duties for the school bake sale to Blunk, the guardians enter a trap filled with Larveks and they must defeat them before the rebels get eaten.

'The Battle of Meridian Plains' : Cedric blocks the village’s water source, in the hopes that thirsty Meridianites will break down and reveal the location of the rebels’ secret hideout. There’s fresh water in a nearby lake but it’s inhabited by an elusive creature called the Kaithim, which the Guardians have to battle. But Cedric discovers the entrance to the Infinite City, just before Vathek is able to seal his comrades inside. Aldarn, separated from Caleb and with limited food before the City is inevitably overtaken, makes a tactical decision to charge the Castle. Caleb and the Guardians join the premature attack but the uprising fails and many rebels, including Aldarn and Caleb’s father, are thrown in Phobos’s dungeons.

'The Rebel Rescue' : Caleb is making plans for the escape of the rebels captured by Phobos in the abortive battle of the Meridian Plains . With Blunk’s help, he tries to map the tunnel system to the castle’s dungeon. But the reconnaissance mission goes wrong and Blunk is left behind on Meridian. Looking for the Passling, Caleb and the Guardians find and save a Castle Guard wounded in battle and left for dead by Cedric. When the Guard, Tynar, sees Earth and the girls’ concern for his recovery, he switches loyalties and promises to guide them through the complex subterranean passageways into the dungeons where the rebels from the uprising are being held. The daring raid frees the rebels, and Tynar begins spreading the word among Phobos’s guards that the other side of the Veil is not as they’ve been told. Back in Heatherfield, Will impulsively kisses Matt, who has offered her a pet dormouse named Mr Huggles earlier in the episode.

'The Stolen Heart'  : In Meridian, the Infinite City occupied by Phobos' guards leaves a thousand rebels with nowhere to hide while Elyon, though shaken by the sight of monstrous Lurdens working in her castle, is still blissfully unaware of what’s being planned for her Coronation. Caleb and the Guardians have to get close enough to warn her, but how can they without the Heart of Candracar which has been stolen by Jeek the evil Passling?

'The Final Battle' : In Meridian, Elyon is at the apogee of her powers and excitedly prepares for tomorrow’s Coronation. But Phobos and Cedric talk out of her earshot: there’s something afoot that Phobos isn’t telling his sister. Meanwhile in Heatherfield, Caleb has finally figured out with the Guardians’ help a way to get his men across the Meridian Plains unseen. Before they go to Meridian Cornelia gives Caleb a long kiss. The final battle is about to begin.

Differences in both comic book and the animated series

As with many comic book to animated series conversions, creators use certain liberties to dramatize, censor, and generally condense the original story. Below is a listing of major distinctions between the original comic and animated series.

  • Introduces exclusive characters, such as Blunk and the Mage Who are not in the actual comic book.
  • The name of Phobos is mentioned in the first episode.
  • Caleb has no family in the comics, as he was a Murmurer.
  • The Princess name of Elyon is Weena.
  • In the show all the Guardians can fly. In the comics, only Hay Lin can fly.
  • It took a few episodes for Cedric to locate and take Elyon.
  • In the comics, Elyon's birthday is on October 31, where as the show has it as March 13.
  • Differently from the comics, Elyon would be reduced to a black rose instead of dying from having her powers siphoned.
  • Matt finds out about the Guardians in The Stolen Heart. In the comics, he does not know about the girl's secret until Will tells him.
  • In the comics, Hay Lin's grandmother dies. In the animated series, she doesn't.
  • In the comics, Xin Jing is not the daughter of the Jade Emperor.
  • In the comics, Hay Lin has knee-high stockings when transformed; on the show her legs are completely covered.
  • In the show Irma has longer hair.
  • In the show the girls are not as powerful as they are in the comics.
  • In the comics, the Heart of Kandrakar is kept in Will's palm of her hand, but in the show it is kept as a necklace.
  • In the animated series, the Astral Drops when created don't know anything and disappear at the mention of 'Astral Drops'. In the comics they are created as a perfect copy (with the exception at first of Will's Astral Drop) and disappear when requested.
  • In the show, Will's dormouse is named Mr. Huggles and is grey. In the comics, he has a different name (he is nameless in the US, and has many other names in other countries) and is black and brown.
  • The comics have twelve portal openings in the Veil, while the show has it as unlimited.
  • In the comics, the dormouse remains with Will, but in the series he is passed on to Irma, then Hay Lin, then Taranee, then Cornelia, then Elyon, then Matt.
  • Will and the other girls are mentioned as 12-13 years old in the show, where as the comics show them as 13-14 years old.
  • In the comics, both Will and Taranee are new to Sheffield Institute, but in the series Will is the only new girl; Taranee was new last year.
  • In the comics, Prince Phobos' advisors are known as "Murmurers". The show has them named "Whisperers".
  • In the comics, Hay Lin's play turns out well, but in the show it turns out very badly, and is partially insulted by Mrs Knickerbocher.
  • In the show, most of the people of Meridian are humans, but in the comics there are actually four kinds: the Galhot, the native species of Meridian (Vathek is a Galhot); The Escanor, descendants of knight Escanor, a human warrior who was asked to help the Galhot defeating an enemy. As a reward he got the throne, later offered to his wife Leryn. The mixbreeds are creatures coming from both Galhot and Escanor parents. The fourth one isn't a real species, but independent Whisperers like Caleb.
  • In the books, Irma is unable to animate water from thin air; stating: "I can't just wring the stuff out of thin air". In the show, however, she can draw it out of the air (theoretically from the humidity).
  • In the series, Caleb knows the girl's true form, while in the comics, until the end of Part Two, he only knows them in their Guardian form.
  • In the series, when Taranee transforms, her dreadlocks are thicker and shorter than in the comic.
  • In the comic, Irma is slightly plump, Will and Hay Lin are very skinny, Cornelia and Taranee are fit and athletic. In the series, they are all thin.
  • Some characters have different hair color in the series. Matt Olsen, for example, has both his hair color and skin tone are changed. The same is with Nigel.
  • On the show, Anna Lair is Irma's birth mother, not her stepmother. In "Happy Birthday, Will" Anna remembers when Irma was very young, and in "Parents Night", Irma mentions that her mother once baked cookies with her nickname for Irma when she was a baby.
  • In the comic, Halinor was kicked out of Kandrakar, but in the show she lives there and looks younger.
  • In the comic, The Knights of Revenge are Khor, Shagon, Tridart, and Ember while in the show The Knights of Vengeance are Gargoyle, Miranda, Sandpit, The Tracker, and Frost.
  • In the comic, Cornelia expresses that she had known Elyon since second grade, whereas in the show, she says that she has known Elyon since kindergarten
  • In the series, the 'claw' on Cornelia's skirt is facing the wrong way.
  • In season one, Will's powers were super-strength and the ability to blind her enemies (for a short time) by releasing a bright pink light from the heart. Though this will change in season two when she will get the power to talk to appliances and the power to release absolute energy, a lightning-like attack.
    File:Th abcd.jpg
    Will releasing absolute energy
  • In the comic, Cornelia finds Peter, Taranee's brother, attractive and tries to avoid him, but in one of the recent episodes, "B is for Betrayal," she flirts with him and develops a small crush at the end of the episode.
  • In the comic book, Susan Vandom wanted to move Will away from Heatherfield because they were not getting along with each other. In the show, she wants to move Will away because her grades are slipping.
  • In the comic book, the girls knew about their secondary powers relatively soon. In the show, the girls don't develop secondary powers until the second season.
  • In the comic book, it is never explained why the girls have secondary powers, in the show, Taranee suggests that their secondary powers developed once the veil in Kandrakar was lifted.

Voice Cast

Bloopers

  • Irma is the only guardian whose costume colors keep switching.
  • In the episode, "The Return of the Tracker", Will says, "They picked up the scent again?!" when the Guardians try to wash away their trail by breaking a hydrant, but, even though Will moves her mouth, Irma's voice is heard saying the line. Also, in the same episode, when Irma sees a portal open inside the theatre, she rushes out the back door to find Caleb. There, she warns him about the portal, but sees the Tracker on his way. She screams, but the scream is much too high-pitched to be the voice of Irma.
  • The girl's costumes are pink instead of purple.
  • Taranee's wristbands are pink instead of turquoise.
  • In the episode, "Happy Birthday Will", Will tells Caleb that he's "So talented" when he gives her a present he made himself. Although Will's mouth moves, it is actually Elyon's voice that comes out. Also in the following episode, when Will asks Hay Lin "What good is a map if it doesn't show anything" it is clearly Irma's mouth that is moving.
  • In the episode, "The Labyrinth", Elyon expresses towards the end that she does not like donuts. But in "Happy Birthday Will", Elyon can be seen eating one after asking Caleb to dance.
  • Towards the end of the episode "B is for Betrayal", when the girls return to earth, Will and Taranee have somehow changed outfits, as they are not wearing the same clothes as before they were taken to Candrakar.

Trivia

  • In the second season, Will says "The Heart" when they transform, and the transformation scene is cut down.
  • For season 2, SIP Animation brought a new studio to animate the series.
  • In the US, Season 2 didn't get a new opening because Disney US wanted consistency when they aired Season 1 & 2 simultaneously. This doesn't apply to the UK Season 2 opening, which did get revamped with new scenes.
  • The UK opening uses a more eastern style opening sequence because in the opening it looks like a story and does not only focus on the action (a lot of anime openings are like this), while the US opening is more western because while the theme song is playing we see action scenes & clips in the background.
  • Jetix US airs the UK Season 2 opening as a promotional clip for Season 2, though when it is played it doesn't include the credits, also the first scene that shows the alarm clock is slightly edited to replace the Kermit the frog dolls with random colors (the reason why the Kermit-looking dolls were edited out was because Disney US didn't want to have legal issues with the owner/s of the character).
  • The US opening includes scenes from the W.I.T.C.H. demo reel.
  • When characters are teleporting, you can see clearly a V. If you play frame by frame you'll read V A N-S which is read "Vaness", nickname of Vanessa, the girlfriend of Guillaume Louyot, visual effects supervisor (season 1 since episode 11 to entire season 2).
  • Towards the end on "Happy Birthday Will" when Will meets up with Matt, the tune to the European theme song can be heard.

  • The T.V series theme song lyrics are:

We are, we are, we are W.I.T.C.H. We are, we are...

There is a place where darkness reigns.
We’ve got the power to fight back.
We save the day. United five as one.
We can become more than you know
The heart will lead the way to what we can control

Water, Fire, Earth, and Air. Guardians Unite
We are, we are, we are W.I.T.C.H. We are, we are...
We are, we are, we are W.I.T.C.H. We are, we are... W.I.T.C.H.

At times, the song sounds very similar to Final Fantasy X-2's Real Emotion.

UK Theme Song

[2] (Season 1) [3] (Season 2)

Do you know which one of us can control the fire
Which one is queen of air,
Do you know which one can do magic tricks with water
Who's got power over Earth

Come on, you better run
'cause W.I.T.C.H. will strike together...

W.I.T.C.H., we're one, we're strong like nothing you see,

We can save the day from dark, from bad, There's no one we need (There's no one we need)

W.I.T.C.H!

We will turn this world around, No doubt, For once and for all!
