The Alabama gubernatorial election of 2006 is scheduled to occur on November 7, 2006, the primary occurred on June 6, 2006.[1] Incumbent Bob Riley will face current Democratic Lieutenant Governor Lucy Baxley for re-election. Riley's recent approval rating (July 2006) was 60%, which is an eight point jump from the prior month. [2]
Candidates
Democrats
Lucy Baxley, the Lieutenant Governor and former State Treasurer, won the June 6 Democratic primary with approximately 60% of the primary votes. She defeated Don Siegelman, former Governor & Lieutenant Governor, who conceded with appriximately 35% of the primary votes. Other Democratic primary candidates Joe Copeland, Nathan Mathis, James Potts, Katherine Mack, and Harry Lyon all received less than 1% of votes.
Republicans
Bob Riley, the Incumbent Governor, won the June 6 Republican primary with approximately 65% of the primary votes. He defeated former Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, who conceded with approximately 35% of the primary votes.
Others
Loretta Nall (Libertarian/Marijuana Party) - Founder, US Marijuana Party. She did not collect enough signatures through her petitioning efforts to appear on the ballot under Alabama's ballot access laws, and is campaigning as a write-in candidate.
