Draft:List of songs over fifteen minutes in length

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Nezzo (talk | contribs) at 16:57, 28 July 2006 (L). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This is a list of songs that are over fifteen minutes in length. Note that a song may be defined as "a relatively short musical composition for the human voice (commonly accompanied by other musical instruments), which features words (lyrics)". This is a list of songs which are notable due to their unusual length.

For the sake of simplicity, the names of movements within songs are not included. The list should be limited to songs of some importance in musical history in order to avoid it becoming impossibly long and disorganized.

Excluded from the list are:

  • Instrumental pieces
  • Classical pieces and operas (including rock operas)
  • Live, extended, or re-mixed versions of songs
  • Long tracks which are clearly several songs in succession, such as tracks from Kyuss's Welcome to Sky Valley and The Smashing Pumpkins's "Pastichio Medley"
  • Songs containing a long silence before a "secret" or "hidden track" (such as the 20+ minute hidden track on Queen's 1995 album Made in Heaven)
  • Songs that are indexed in parts on CD but are not continuous, such as Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," which has both halves on either sides of its respective album.
  • At least temporarily, songs by artists without a Wikipedia article are not included.

Exceptions from these criteria are:

  • (21:00) I in I [EP] (2004)
  • (47:06) in Catch 33 [LP] [CONFLATED] (2005)

note: the song Elastic arguably goes against the rules of this list for including a 'hidden' track at the end, but there is no silence between the song (which ends at around 7:00) and the hidden track (which begins at 11:00). The gap itself is bridged by a long bass guitar drone.

It first appeared on several Factory videos, as a backing music for shots of the club in construction. This is a different track to "5-8-6" on the Power, Corruption & Lies album, and according to bassist Peter Hook, the name derives from the musical bar structure of another track on the album, Ecstasy.
