In 1866, a large group of workers and reformists combined their efforts in an attempt to pressure Congress into making labor reforms, specifically an eight-hour workday. The effort failed, and the Union itself broke apart in 1873, but they succeeded in raising public awareness of the dismal conditions many worked in.
