Allen, New York

Allen is a town located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 462.

The Town of Allen was incorporated in 1823, formed from part of the Town of Angelica. In 1829 more territory was added from the Town of Birdsall. The town is in the northern half of Allegany County.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.8 km² (36.6 mi²). 94.2 km² (36.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.60% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 462 people, 178 households, and 132 families residing in the town. The population density is 4.9/km² (12.7/mi²). There are 411 housing units at an average density of 4.4/km² (11.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.92% White, 0.00% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 0.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 178 households out of which 30.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.9% are married couples living together, 4.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.8% are non-families. 22.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 123.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 123.2 males.
