Wikipedia:Article Collaboration and Improvement Drive

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Jwanders (talk | contribs) at 11:22, 2 August 2006 (Secular ethics (12 votes, stays until August 10): Updating date). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

The Article Improvement Drive is a weekly collaboration to improve non-stub articles to featured article status. (For stub articles or topics with no articles, see Collaboration of the week.)

/History - For past winners.
/Removed - For removed nominations.
/Maintenance - AID upkeep.

Introduction

To vote or nominate you have to be a registered user with at least one contribution that is not a vote. Any and all articles may be nominated except:

If you wish to help with maintenance of Article Improvement Drive (updating vote counts and such), please see this page: /Maintenance.

How to nominate

Here is the template for nominations:

ARTICLE (1 vote, stays until DATE ONE WEEK LATER)
:Nominated MONTH DAY, YEAR; needs at least 4 votes by DATE ONE WEEK LATER, YEAR

; Support:
# (sign with four tildes)

; Comments:
* (put your reason for nomination, sign again)

----
 1. Copy and paste the template to the bottom of the list of nominations on this page and fill it out. It is important to use UTC time; the current time and date now is 17:54, Thursday, November 14, 2024 (UTC).
 2. Under "comments" section put explanation of what work is needed.
 3. After submitting the new nomination, go to the nominated article and put AIDnomto do on the top of the article's talk page.

How to vote

Sign with "# ~~~~" on the end of the list of the article you want to vote for and then update the vote count in the subhead. Opposing votes are not counted; see approval voting. You can vote for as many articles as you like. If, after you vote, the vote count equals the "needs at least xx votes by", then add 4 to "needs at least xx votes" and add a week to date in vote count and "needs at least xx votes by" notice.

Example. You encounter this situation and decide to vote:

History of the world (23 votes, stays until February 7, 2006)
:Nominated December 8, 2005; needs at least 24 votes by February 7, 2006

First you put "# ~~~~" on the end of the list of people who voted for that article and then change the vote count and date in following manner:

History of the world (24 votes, stays until February 14, 2006)
:Nominated December 8, 2005; needs at least 28 votes by February 14, 2006

How the article is selected

Article with most votes on each Sunday in 00:00 GMT is selected as "The current Article Improvement Drive article". If two articles have same number of votes, the older nominee wins.

The next project article is to be selected on Sunday, August 6, 2006. 00:00 GMT (Template:DAYSTOSUNDAY)

How an article is removed from the list

Articles need four votes per week to stay on the list. If current date (November 14 2024) exceeds "stays until" date of particular article, that article entry is removed from this page and moved to page for removed nominations.

 • I just found this article basically empty. I added as much as I could borrowing from many other articles but it is still very lacking. I figure this article represents a major world-view, and would serve some good educational purposes for people who argue morality is impossible for atheists and agnostics alike. If these weren't a major part of the world's religions, I would say secular ethics apply to anyone, regardless of religion. Star Ghost 19:08, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
 • Many articles can and sooner or later will be improved by someone; 'Secular Ethics' is different because the subject may all too easily invite a personal view to appear, and very few individual writers might obtain a correctly balanced weight of the different approaches. It will hardly get enough votes to hang on here, though it surely deserves and I'm afraid it requires a commitment by an experienced and qualified team of authors. I hope they are willing to accept this challenge for the sake of having a decent article that is unlikely to win prizes. SomeHuman 18:23, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
 • Interesting topic. Lots of potential, and a very important of modern ethics. -Silence 07:28, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
 • This definetely needs to be improved, I'm willing to work on it but I think this needs a team effort. --Chrisrivers 16:35, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
 • This is one of the most important ideas that exists in the world today (ethics sans religion, that is). Vote. Lockeownzj00 10:35, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I note also that User:Spirou's account was created thirty minutes before voting here, User:DeVandalizer's account was created two days before voting here, and User:Tagenar's account was created two days before voting here. All three users have less than ten edits. I consider this an abuse of the AID nominations process. --Ideogram 03:46, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I emailed Uzza myself when he voted suggesting that he consider making other edits on Wikipedia, but I got no reply. Since it's been a week, I would agree with removing his vote on that basis, as he appears to be foreign and will probably contribute to his own language Wikipedia if any.
The other three you mention are long-term members of WikiFur who have been encouraged to improve the furry fandom article for the reasons I specified below. WikiFur's sitenotice (for registered users only) contained a notice encouraging "Wikipedia editors" to help out, and a longer message (again, encouraging existing editors of Wikipedia to take part in the drive) was posted on the WikiFur LiveJournal. Many editors of WikiFur are also long-time editors of Wikipedia, so I don't see what was unreasonable about that - it's faster and less spammier than leaving a message on the talk page of every person in Category:Furry Wikipedians, which I did consider. Indeed, User:Pifactorial said they were about to make the same LiveJournal post.
If you want to discount the three voters mentioned because they're new, then the criteria for removing articles need to be changed to specifically say that new editors are not welcome to participate. My view is that, although it was not the intended result, Wikipedia just gained three new editors as a result of this entry. Spirou and DeVandalizer in particular have made significant contributions (500+ edits each) on WikiFur; I suspect they will become similarly active on Wikipedia over time, as Xydexx has. GreenReaper 04:50, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the explanation. I certainly can't change the AID voting policy by myself, but I did want to note that the sudden burst of votes looked suspicious. If the new editors do move on to become significant contributors I am all for it. --Ideogram 04:52, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. I suspected we would get a good response from the postings - furries are enthusiastic people! WikiFur's reached 4,400 articles in just a year powered by the same enthusiasm (hmm, maybe we can call ourselves the The 4400 now? :-), and it seems like it would be a good idea to try and encourage editors who have "trained up" on wiki editing to come over to "the big wiki". We do our best to send over regular visitors, too - most articles that have an equivalent over here will link to it. GreenReaper 05:08, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • The article already links to the furry Wiki. Although the votes in support of this article are probably well-intentioned, I think a lot of regular contributors to the AID are unable to relate to the furry concept (that's certainly true for me although I can't say I've contributed much in the AID lately). As an encyclopedia, focusing too much on things like this - and I did not say the word fancruft! :P - is where WP:BIAS comes from. But hey, every dog (pun intended) deserves his day I suppose. • An integral work that sheds much light on the current War on Terror and its global repercussions. Almost there - just needs some fact-checking and footnoting.
 • This article is in bad, bad shape. It's not "almost there", it's not even close—almost the entire article is in list format, when it should be in prose format, and its referencing is poor and highly inconsistent (and some of its more dramatic statements are completely unreferenced). It's also on the short side. -Silence 22:50, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • Article about an important man in music history - one for young and old alike to relate to. Needs trimming slightly, 40kb. Needs many many more citations, and there is a mixed use of citations, which need changing to the recommended (but not required) style.
 • Note: John Peel was the commentator on independent popular music in the UK. There should be enough obituaries kicking around to fully support the content of the article (where accurate). - Samsara (talkcontribs) 08:20, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • A major topic about which we should have an excellent and detailed article, but our article is littered with section tags and lists. Lukobe 20:39, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • As the top level article for an important cultural region that has been critically influential for millennia (and is still daily in the news as Iraq), this article is almost entirely woeful. Requires expansion, cleanup, citation.... Where to begin? Let's start by making it AID for the week! Paul James Cowie 15:31, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Case for

A unique cult anime whose article has recently bloomed into a host of separate pages and is ripe for a mass overhall. It's largely complete, if rather densely worded, and could use some fresh people tooling with it. -Litefantastic 22:16, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • Article seems unrefined for such an important religion, should (like all the world religions) be a featured article. Is going to need a group effort to get back to FA status. Chrisrivers 19:06, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • One of the most important landmarks in Canada, and definitely in Toronto. I think the article is pretty good (and I have been working on this article for a while), but I think it could be better – I'd like it to even get to FA if possible. References are sorely lacking.
