National Treasure 2 is a 2007 sequel to the 2004 film National Treasure. The only cast members known to be returning as of yet are Nicolas Cage, Justin Bartha and Diane Kruger. The Internet Movie Database reports that it will be directed by Jon Turteltaub and written primarily by Gregory Poirier. As of January 27 2006, several producers are also listed.
It was stated in the first film's commentary that there were no plans for a sequel, but, due to the first film's impressive box-office performance, a sequel was given the go-ahead in 2005.
The first film, starring Nicolas Cage, Sean Bean, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, and Jon Voight earned $347.5 million worldwide.
Poirier wrote Disney's Swiss Family Robinson, which attracted Jonathan Mostow to sign on as director.
Jon Turteltaub is shooting for a Thanksgiving 2007 release.
Plot
Justin Bartha reported that the plot "will see the team from NT 1 going international to discover the truth about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln (with unknown historical facts about the Civil War and Lincoln - and a surprise ending)."
This was confirmed by Jerry Bruckheimer in July. He says that "this is a wonderful jumping off point for NT1 and Nicolas Cage is very excited about it".
