A museum is a building where interesting or valuable objects, such as works of art and historical artifacts, are kept, studied and displayed.

The word comes from the Latin museum, which is in turn derived from the Greek mouseion, which refers to a place or temple dedicated to the Muses, the patron divinities in Greek mythology of the arts.

The first American museum opened to the public on January 12, 1773 in Charleston, South Carolina.
