Johannes is a Latin form of the name "John". The origin of Johannes is the Greek name Ιωαννης (Ioannes), itself derived from the Hebrew name Yochanan meaning "YAHWEH is gracious". Common German variants for Johannes are Johann, Hans (diminutized to Hänsel, known from "Hänsel und Gretel", a fairy tale by the Grimm brothers), Jens (from Danish) and Jan (from Dutch). Common English variants for Johannes are Jack, Jacky, Johanan, John, Johnny, Jonny and Shawn. In French is Jean, in Spanish Juan and in Portuguese is João.
