Briar Woods High School is located in Ashburn, Virginia, and is part of the Loudoun County Public Schools system. The school is located in the Brambleton community and also serves students who live in Broadlands and Arcola.
History
Briar Woods High School opened on August 29th, 2005 with its student body coming from Stone Bridge High School and Eagle Ridge Middle School. The first and current principal is Edward Starzenski who served as principal of Loudoun County High School during the 2003-2004 school year.
Demographics
In 2005-2006, Briar Woods High School's student population was 68% White; 8% Black; 5% Hispanic; and 19% Asian.
Test Scores
Briar Woods is a provisionally accredited high school by the Virginia Department of Education because the school is still in its first year of operation. No average SAT scores will be available until the first senior class graduates in 2007.
Athletics
Briar Woods' mascot is a falcon and is a member of the AA Dulles District and Region II. Because the school is currently very small and does not have a senior class in its first year, some of the sports teams have been compromised negatively as a result. The football team played a junior varsity schedule instead of an independent varsity schedule, like Heritage and Stone Bridge did when they opened.
Extracurricular Activities
Music
Briar Woods has three bands, which are the Symphonic-Winds Band, the Falcon Regiment Marching Band, and a Jazz Band. The Jazz Band, which is not available as a class yet, meets before school to practice. In the school's first year, the Symphonic-Winds Band was selected to go to the New York Wind Band Festival and perform in Carnegie Hall. All bands are under the direction of Duane Minnick. There is also a chorus program consisting of one small chorus due to the fact that the school has a small population. Additionally, there are string ensemble and guitar ensembles as well.
Drama
Briar Woods put on two shows during the 2005-2006 school year. Their fall play was Icarus All Over Again and their Spring Musical was The Wizard of Oz.
Clubs
Briar Woods High School has many clubs and organizations including well-known clubs such as SCA, NHS, DECA, and Key Club. The school also has clubs like It's Academic, Spanish, Dutch, French, Latin, Art, Drama, Forensics, Literary Magazine, Book Club, the Philosophy, Bible, VFEA , Science and Math, International, PEER, and Step Team.
