Kyle Hawkins is the first openly homosexual male coach of a men's team sport at the NCAA level. In May 2006, he was "outted" in several major papers including The New York Times and the news network MSNBC. Hawkins is the head coach of the University of Missouri–Columbia men's lacrosse. As the first openly homosexual male collegiate coach, he has been heralded as a hero to homosexual men and has paved the way for further acceptance for homosexuals in the world of athletics.
