The Philippines national football team is the national team of the Philippines and is controlled by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF).

Despite being the oldest team in Asia (their first-ever match took place on home soil against China on February 1, 1913), the Philippines has never had any significant success on the international stage, ranking only 191st out of 205 countries in the latest FIFA World Rankings as of 2006. They are currently one of the weakest teams in the world and did not enter the qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in order to focus more on developing youth football and competing in regional tournaments such as the Southeast Asian Games. The main reason for this lack of success is mainly because football is not the country's principal sport. The national identity of the Filipinos is tied very closely to basketball.

Football, however, is very popular and is in fact played by many people in the provinces of Iloilo, particularly in the municipality of Barotac Nuevo, and Negros Occidental and in the Mindanao islands.

Famous Players

Paulino Alcantara is the Philippines' greatest footballer of all-time and the first player born outside Europe ever to play football in Europe. He played for F.C. Barcelona early in the 20th century and won five Spanish Cup championships. He was Barca's all-time goal-scorer with 357 goals in as many games. Alcantara went on to represent both Spain and the Philippines in international football, appearing five times for the Spanish national team and scored six goals, including two in his Spanish debut in 1921. He played for the Philippine national team in the 1917 Far Eastern Games in Tokyo, Japan and led the country's demolition of the host nation 15-2, the country's best ever result in international football.

Freddy Gonzalez

Alfredo Razon Gonzalez is considered by many as the first ever Filipino professional football player in history. He was the country's finest striker since the legendary Paulino Alcantara, Gonzalez played for the Eastern Asian Bank football team (signed on January 2003) in the Vietnam Football League (or the V-League). A football superstar in Ho Chi Minh City's Thong Nat Stadium, he was a many time member of the Philippine national team and played as a part-time player in Europe.

Early in 2005, two Chelsea Football Club reserve players received a surprise call-up for the Philippines Under-23 team for the Southeast Asian Games after a young fan sitting in front of his PlayStation 2 game console discovered that the Ashford-born brothers were eligible for selection because of their mother.

James Younghusband, then 19, and his younger brother Phil, then 18, were on the list of Chelsea FC players in the FIFA football game and an anonymous e-mail alerted the Philippine Football Federation as to their availability.

James scored his first international goal against Cambodia, the final score resulting in a 4-2 victory for the Philippines.
