Plot

Template:Spoiler In a June 2005 interview with Premiere magazine, Batman Begins screenwriter David S. Goyer said, "The next one would have Batman (Christian Bale) enlisting the aid of James Gordon (Gary Oldman) and [Harvey] Dent in bringing down the Joker (Heath Ledger)... but not killing him. In the third movie, the Joker would go on trial, scarring Dent in the process."[1] Template:Endspoiler

On July 31, 2006, Jeff Robinov, the President of Production at Warner Bros. Pictures, officially announced that Heath Ledger would portray the Joker.[2]

Harvey Dent

Based on what screenwriter Goyer told Premiere magazine, Harvey Dent is expected to to be introduced in the sequel. Josh Lucas is the only actor to have expressed an interest in the role.[3] Liev Schreiber, another rumored actor to portray Harvey Dent, had written in a chat that he was unaware of the role being available, saying, "I seem to be the last one to hear because I know nothing about it."[4]

Unconfirmed

Lucius Fox

Morgan Freeman, who portrayed Lucius Fox in Batman Begins, stated in an About.com interview that he didn't know if he would reprise his role, and that it would be up to the writer and director.[5]

Rachel Dawes

Katie Holmes was confirmed to reprise her role as Rachel Dawes in the sequel on August 11, 2005 [6] However, later sources indicate that Holmes may not be returning after all.

Carmine Falcone

Tom Wilkinson, who portrayed gangster Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins, was asked by Empire magazine about his return to the sequel. Wilkinson responded, "Well, my character's mad and possibly dead so I don't think so."[7]

Cillian Murphy, who portrayed the Scarecrow in Batman Begins, has expressed interest on returning. However, Murphy does not know if he will reprise his role, though he is signed on for possible sequels.[8]

The Penguin

The Penguin is rumored to be a villain in The Dark Knight, alongside the Joker. The role has supposedly been offered to Philip Seymour Hoffman, but there has been no official word from the studio about the Penguin.[9]

Not appearing

Robin

Christopher Nolan has stated that as long as he is directing the franchise, Robin will not be cast. Nolan said he is still portraying Batman as a young man, so Robin would be too young at the moment. Nolan jokingly added, "Dick Grayson's still in a crib somewhere." When asked who Nolan would cast for Robin if the opportunity arose now, Nolan suggested Frankie Muniz, humorously saying, "If he doesn't age too quickly."[10]
