In the anime and manga series Naruto, the village of Konohagakure is home to the following Jōnin-ranked and Tokubetsu Jōnin-ranked shinobi.

Jōnin

Aburame Shibi

File:Aburame Shibi.jpg
Aburame Shibi

Aburame Shibi (油女シビ) is the father of Aburame Shino. During the Invasion of Konoha he used his bugs to draw the poison from Kankurō's puppet out of the body of his son. It is not known what the gourd on his back is for, but it is generally assumed that it is for holding more kikaichu insects (This is fanon, but is widely accepted). A scene in one of the anime fillers support this when one of the clan member brought a gourd to a battle that only used insects against another insect using clan.

Trivia

  • Shibi was named Gen (ゲン) in the anime. However, it is confirmed in the second Data Book that his name is Shibi.
  • According to the databooks, his favorite phrase is "Even the soul of an insect has 5 parts" from the Konoha Hundred leaf collections. The Hundred Leaf Collections (hyakuyōshū) is a reference to Man'yōshū ("Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves"), a famous collection of Japanese poems.)

Akimichi Chōza

File:Akimichi Chouza.JPG
Akimichi Chōza

Akimichi Chōza (秋道チョウザ) is the father of Akimichi Chōji. Like his son, he was part of an Ino-Shika-Chō trio, together with Nara Shikaku and Yamanaka Inoichi.

Trivia

  • His name is often thought to be Akimichi Chōmaru. However, this name is fanon since it has been confirmed by the second official data book that his name is Akimichi Chōza.
  • Around his stomach, he wears the same type of purple sash that the Sound four and Orochimaru wear.
  • His son, Akimichi Chōji, resembles Chōza in Part II of Naruto.
  • There was a Jonin that resembled him in the first chapter of the Naruto series. He was one of the Jonin that wanted to kill Naruto after they found. It is possible that he might actually be that very same Jonin, but it hasn't been confirmed yet.

Dan

File:Dan (from Naruto).jpg
Dan

Dan (ダン) is the uncle of Shizune and Tsunade's boyfriend. Because his younger sister died during one of the many raids on the village, he aimed to be able to better protect his loved ones. For this end, he wanted to become Hokage. He died during a battle despite Tsunade's desperate efforts to save him. His death caused Tsunade's hemophobia and made her leave Konoha together with Shizune.

During the present timeline of the story (many years after Dan's death), Orochimaru had tried to convince Tsunade to heal his arms which had been sealed by the Sandaime (effectively preventing him from using jutsu), by offering to bring back Dan, along with Tsunade's little brother Nawaki to life using a forbidden jutsu, in exchange for Tsunade's healing of his arms.

Hatake Kakashi

Hatake Sakumo

  • Age: ? (deceased)2
  • Rank: Unknown, probably: Jōnin2 and S-Ranked Ninja
  • Height: ?
  • Weight: ?
  • Birthday: ?
  • Blood Type: O (?)
  • Unique Trait: Hakkō Chakura Tō (White Light Chakra Sabre)

Hatake Sakumo (はたけサクモ), also known as Konoha's White Fang (木ノ葉の白い牙, Konoha no Shiroi Kiba) after the White Light Chakra Blade he used, was the father of Hatake Kakashi. Sakumo was the enemy of Chiyo's son, who is Sasori's father or uncle. According to the Fourth Hokage, he was once more respected and skilled than the Legendary Three Ninjas (伝説の三忍), but fell in disgrace after he failed a mission vital to Konohagakure and the failure caused the village to suffer great losses. Despite knowing how critically important the success of the mission needed to be, Sakumo had chosen to save the lives of his comrades over the success of the mission. Dishonored, Sakumo committed seppuku after deep depression and a drop in his skills. His father's failure and suicide caused Kakashi to lead his life strictly according to the Ninja code. Sakumo left his White Light Chakra Sabre (白光チャクラ刀, Hakkō Chakura Tō) to Kakashi. This blade utilized chakra to produce a trail of white light from the blade when swung (the blade being the metaphorical "fang"). It was cut in half during a fight between Kakashi and an Iwagakure no Sato (Hidden Rock Village) shinobi.

This is what the Fourth Hokage said to Uchiha Obito about Sakumo:

"その親父さんの前で"伝説の三忍"の名すらかすむほどだった..."

"Even the names of the Legendary Sannin were insignificant before that one's father..."

The 2nd Databook reiterates the point of him being seen as greater than all three of the Sannin on page 128:

"その実力の前には, あの"三忍"の名前もかすむほどであったという."

"Before his power, it was said that even the name of the "Sannin" was insignificant."

In the Japanese culture, one's "name" is a measure of one's status or reputation.

Nara Shikaku

Nara Shikaku

Nara Shikaku (奈良シカク) is the father of Nara Shikamaru. Like his son, he was part of an Ino-Shika-Chō trio, together with Akimichi Chōza and Yamanaka Inoichi. He is married to Nara Yoshino who, as his son says, has him whipped. As a member of the Nara clan, he raises deer, (which comes in great help to Chōji after he is injured, When Tsunade asks for Deer Antler, then he was there outside the in the waiting area) whose antlers can be used to make a medicine which halts the destructive effects of the Akimichi clan's Sanshoku no Ganyaku (三色の丸薬), or colored pills. Along with his former teammates, Inoichi and Chōza, he helped defend Konoha from attack by Sand and Sound nin.

Trivia

  • His name is often thought to be Nara Shikato. However, this name is fanon since it has been confirmed by the second official data book that his name is Nara Shikaku. In the anime, even Tsunade is seen calling him Shikaku when returning back from treating Akimichi Chōji during the Sasuke Retrieval arc.
  • Shika means deer but shikaku can mean assassin.

Yamanaka Inoichi

Yamanaka Inoichi (山中いのいち) is the father of Yamanaka Ino. Like his daughter, he was part of an Ino-Shika-Chō trio, together with Nara Shikaku and Akimichi Chōza. The other two often tease him about having a daughter instead of a son.

Trivia

  • His name is often thought to be Yamanaka Inoshi. However, this name is fanon since it has been confirmed by the second official data book that his name is Yamanaka Inoichi.

Tokubetsu Jōnin

Ebisu

File:Ebisu2.jpg
Ebisu

Ebisu (エビス) specializes in the private training of elite ninja, as stated by Hatake Kakashi. He is Konohamaru's tutor, and dislikes the fact that Konohamaru idolizes Uzumaki Naruto, because he only sees Naruto as the container of the Kyūbi. His opinion of Naruto doesn't change when Naruto "defeats" him with the Hāremu no Jutsu (Ninja Harem Technique) after the Oiroke no Jutsu (Ninja Centerfold) fails. Naruto often refers to him as the "closet pervert". Later, recommended by Hatake Kakashi as a great teacher, Ebisu begins Naruto's one-month training for the Chūnin Selection Exam final. It is during this time that through being with Naruto and seeing the influence he had on Konohamaru that Ebisu realizes that Naruto is more than just the container of a demon, but that he is an outstanding Leaf Ninja. However, Ebisu does not complete Naruto's training, because Jiraiya takes over by summoning a large toad which tongue-whips Ebisu unconscious. Currently, he has been put in charge of a Genin team with Konohamaru and his two friends, Udon and Moegi, as its members.

Trivia

  • The name "Ebisu" comes from the Japanese god Ebisu, who is usually pictured as a well rounded man with a hammer in his hand that brings wealth and prosperity to believers.

Gekkō Hayate

File:GekkouHayate.PNG
Gekkō Hayate

Gekkō Hayate (月光 ハヤテ) was the examiner of the preliminary third portion of the Chūnin exams. At first sight, Hayate appears to not be in the best of health, with a chronic cough and bags under his eyes. It is unknown what causes his chronic cough.

Hayate was the first to discover the truth behind the secret invasion plan between the Sound and the Sand - as he was discovered eavesdropping on a conversation between Baki (of the Sand) and Yakushi Kabuto (of the Sound), Hayate was unfortunately killed by Baki. Were he able to pass on the information gained from that fateful night, Konoha could have avoided the disastrous battle against Orochimaru and the loss of their Third Hokage.

Hayate's lover, Uzuki Yugao, swore that she would avenge his death - which will prove difficult as his killer Baki is now their ally.

He seems to be very skilled and even Baki who was trying to kill him commented that his skills were very advanced for his age. If it were not for Baki's ability to control wind to stop his blade things might have went differently

Trivia

  • The name "Gekkō" means "lunar light" and "Hayate" means "quick as wind". Both are names of Japanese fighter planes from World War II.
  • Hayate is known to be left-handed due to the way he wears, draws, and wields his sword.

Inuzuka Tsume

File:Inuzuka Tsume.jpg
Inuzuka Tsuma

Inuzuka Tsume (犬塚ツメ) is the mother of Hana and Kiba. During the Invasion of Konoha, she fought alongside her dog Kuromaru.

Trivia

  • "Tsume" means "claw" or "talon".

Mitarashi Anko

File:Mitarashi Anko.jpg
Anko

Mitarashi Anko (みたらしアンコ) is the examiner for the second part of the Chūnin Selection Exam in which Uzumaki Naruto takes place in the Forest of Death. During the exam, she arrives at a confrontation with Orochimaru and it is revealed that he used to be her sensei. It seems she had also received Orochimaru's cursed seal of Heaven, but was abandoned by Orochimaru when he decided that she didn't have the desire for power along with vengeance and hatred. In truth, she rejected him and his ways after finding out about some of his human experiments. Orochimaru lost interest in her, though he believes there is some value in letting her live. Orochimaru was able to reawaken her cursed seal during their battle in the Forest of Death, thus incapacitating her with pain and ending their fight. Anko knows several forbidden techniques taught to her by Orochimaru, the most notable of which is Sōjasōsai no Jutsu (literally "Twin Snakes Mutual Death"), a suicidal technique she attempted to use to eliminate her former sensei in the forest of death for the good of Konohagakure.

Trivia

  • Mitarashi and anko are ingredients of dango, which coincidentally is Anko's favorite food. This affinity has brought her into conflict with Tsunade.
  • According to official databook Anko's favorite foods are Dumplings, sweet bean soup and dango. Her least favorite foods are spicy foods. Her hobby is tea ceremonies and her favorite phrase is "Arriving!".
  • According to the official guidebook, Anko wears a customized body glove made of metal mesh under her clothing.

Morino Ibiki

File:Morino Ibiki.jpg
Morino Ibiki

Morino Ibiki (森乃イビキ) is the examiner for the first part of the Chūnin Selection Exam. As the commanding officer of the Konoha Anbu Torture and Interrogation Force (木ノ葉暗部拷問・尋問部隊, Konoha Anbu Gōmon/Jinmon Butai), the design of the first test is obviously his. Described as a sadist by some, Ibiki can easily make people experience mental suffering brought on by his interrogation skills while not even exerting physical torture. He has complete knowledge of human psychology; by attacking a person's mind, he can gain control over their spirit. Ibiki bears burn marks, punctures from where screws were used, and long slash marks, all the physical scars of having been horribly tortured himself. This perhaps illustrates his ability to withstand torture without giving up valuable information.

In the Tea Country filler arc of the anime, Morino Ibiki is shown to have a younger brother, Morino Idate, who left the Leaf Village with Rokusho Aoi and defected to the Village Hidden in the Rain. It was also shown that his scars were Aoi's doing. Since these two incidents have occurred only in the anime and not in the manga, they are not considered canon by fans.

Trivia

  • "Morino Ibiki" means "A snore in the forest"; clearly referring to the big bear that he is.
  • He often refers to Naruto as "an interesting guy". He calls him that twice after the first part of the Chūnin exam and later after the Tea Country Arc. This is probably due to the fact that Naruto will not allow himself to be intimidated by anything. In fact, Naruto was the only one to pass his Chūnin exam with a blank paper, being willing to face the possibility of never becoming a Chūnin in order to protect his team from disqualification. Naruto's impassioned speech at the end of that exam, just before the final question is revealed (there is no actual question, it's merely a test of self-confidence and anyone lacking that fails), inspires confidence in the other students, such that more of them pass than he would have expected.

Namiashi Raidō

File:Raidou.jpg
Raido

Namiashi Raidō (並足ライドウ) has a large scar on his left cheek. He served as the Third Hokage's assistant during the third Chūnin exam. Later he was on the same team as Shizune, Shiranui Genma and Tatami Iwashi. He and Genma confronted the Sound Four who were escorting Uchiha Sasuke to Orochimaru. The Sound Four had to activate their Cursed Seals to defeat them. Raidō was in critical condition after the fight, but was saved by Shizune's medical expertise.

Trivia

  • "Namiashi" means "walking pace." "Raidō" means "following blindly."

Shiranui Genma

File:Shiranui Genma.jpg
Shiranui Genma

Shiranui Genma (不知火ゲンマ) replaced Gekkō Hayate as examiner of the third Chūnin exam after Hayate was killed by Baki, and when Orochimaru's plan to destroy Konoha is executed, Genma battles Baki, presumably to a draw since both of them came out of the fight unscathed. Later he was on the same team as Shizune, Namiashi Raidō and Tatami Iwashi. He and Raidō confronted the Sound Four who were escorting Uchiha Sasuke to Orochimaru. The Sound Four had to activate their Cursed Seals to defeat them. The sound four still suffered a lot of injuries and were forced to rest and they commented that if it weren't for the seals they would have lost.

Genma is often seen with a senbon in his mouth. He uses this as a weapon, spitting it out at the enemy to attack them, or to deflect ranged weapon attacks.

Trivia

  • In the Naruto Narutimate Hero games, Genma has white hair.

Yamashiro Aoba

File:Yamashiro Aoba.jpg
Yamashiro Aoba

Yamashiro Aoba (山城アオバ) was one of the handful of Konoha shinobi that repelled against Kabuto's Nehan Shoja no Jutsu (Temple of Nirvana Technique) and fought against the invading Sound and Sand ninja.

After Uchiha Itachi's visit to the Hidden Leaf Village, Aoba burst into Kakashi's room and shouted for confirmation about Itachi's return to the village without checking who was in the room. Unfortunately, Sasuke was also in the room. Upon hearing this, Sasuke ran off to find his brother.
