ASET, the UK professional body for placement and employability staff, has been at the forefront of developments in sandwich courses and other forms of work placements in both higher and further education for 25 years.
It has been the catalyst for the development of guidelines in many areas and also the promotion and dissemination of best practice. It also seeks to promote the general concept of work-based learning.
ASET is an educational charity run by work-based learning practitioners for work-based learning practitioners and offers support, advice and guidance to all professionals who work in the field.
ASET runs a staff development programme which sees a series of one-day sessions take place through the year. As well as this, the annual Placement and Employability Professionals' Conference is held each autumn which includes both keynote speeches and a wide variety of research papers given in smaller participatory workshop sessions.
The annual reflective essay competition for returning placement students, designed to help market the benefits of undertaking integrated periods of work to new students, sees a first prize of 1000 Euros awarded to the winning student. The ‘Student Stars’ blog competition sees four students chosen to produce informal online diaries of their placement experiences throughout this academic year which can be viewed on the ‘Student Stars’ section of the website. Both these competitions are launched each September.
Bi-annual newsletters, the website (www.asetonline.org), and mailings continue to inform members of developments within ASET and the field of work-based learning.
ASET works closely to achieve its aims with bodies such as the Department for Education and Skills, Universities UK, the Higher Education Academy, Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) and NCWE.
