Christine Fletcher has been prominent in New Zealand politics, both in Parliament and as Mayor of Auckland.

She won the new seat of Epsom for National at the 1996 election, retiring in 1999 after having been elected Mayor of Auckland City. In 2002 she was defeated by John Banks, another former National M.P.

She was a contributor in 2004 to a book promoting citizen participation in the New Zealand democratic process.

In attempting to regain the mayoralty at the election scheduled for October 2004, she was initially overshadowed by the incumbent and by new challenger Dick Hubbard.
