Ted Waitt is the founder and chairman of Gateway Computers. He founded the company on his family's farm in Iowa in 1985, eventually moving to Sgt. Bluff, Iowa and later to North Sioux City, South Dakota, where the company generated their "down-home" branding, complete with computer boxes that resembled cows.

Mr. Waitt moved to La Jolla, California where he resides currently with his wife Joan and children. Since moving to California, Waitt has turned-over day-to-day operations of Gateway Computers and title of CEO to Wayne Inouye.
