Hacky Sack® is the trademarked name of a type of footbag. The name "hacky sack" came from the inventors of the footbag, John Stallburger and Mike Marshall. After many years, the pair sold the title to Wham-O. Wham-O sells their 4 types of hacky sacks at this site: http://www.wham-o.com/default.cfm?page=ViewProducts&Category=10

The game

Hacky Sack also refers to the game played with a footbag. There is a formal game of footbag but Hacky Sack is played informally, with little or no rules. The game is played around the globe. The game is played like this: many players (usually around 4 to 10) stand in a circle and pass the bag around from player to player using feet, knees, chests, heads and any other body part besides arms (shoulders are sometimes allowed). The goal of the game is to complete a "hack" (or several). A "hack" is when the sack is passed around and touched by every player in the circle, without touching the ground. Obviously the difficulty of completing a "hack" is based on the skill of the players and the number of players. The game is based on respect and fun, so someone showing off and kicking to themself a lot is generally frowned upon. Also serving to oneself is not allowed.

Vocab

  • Hacky Sack: Noun, a game played by passing a sack of beans around a circle
  • Bag: Noun, the small sack (filled with beans) that is used in playing the game "Hacky Sack". Bags are usally between one inch to two inches in diameter, and are not filled full with beans. This allows room for the bag to compress, and thus make it easier to control and stall.
  • Hack: Noun, when every person in the circle has touched the bag without it ever touching the ground or the arm of a player.
  • Inside Kick: Noun and Verb, to kick the bag with the inside of your foot.
  • Outside Kick: Noun and Verb, to kick the bag with the outside of your foot
  • Knee: Noun and Verb, to hit the bag with a knee, usally this is not used as a pass becuase it is hard to control its speed and distance, therefore making in unreliable.
  • Toe kick: Noun and Verb, a simple kick where you leg comes straght out and kicks with a toe or top of the foot.
  • Spin: Noun and Verb, to kick the bag, do a full turn (360) and regain control of the bag again.
  • Stall: Noun and Verb, when a player stops a the bag by catching it between their legs, on top of a head, on their foot, knee, back of knee, back or neck. After a player has stalled the bag for a few seconds (enough time for oohs and aahs) the player then kicks the sack back into play. This is mostly done by more experienced players, because this trick is hard. (also known as a delay)
