Rajshahi University (Bangla: রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় Rajshahi Bishshobiddalôe) is a public university in Bangladesh. For a long time, it used to be the only center of higher studies in the northern part of the nation. Rajshahi University was established in 1953. It was the second university in what was then East Pakistan, after University of Dhaka. The campus was designed by architect John Zomanec.

Rajshahi University is located in Rajshahi, a city in Bangladesh. The area of the campus in 753 acres (303.80 hectors), making it one of the largest universities in the region. With 20,000 students and close to 1000 faculty members, it is also one of the largest universities of Bangladesh in terms of student population. History

Zuberi Guest house is named after the university's first Vice-Chancellor

The first proposal to establish a university came in 1917, when the Calcutta University created the Sadler commission to assess the need and feasibility for a university in northern and southern Bengal. However, the recommendations of the report had no immediate consequences.

Following the Partition of India in 1947, what is now Bangladesh became East Pakistan. It was felt a university should be established in the long deprived northern part of the East Pakistan. Demands for a university gained momentum when two further universities were established in West Pakistan without the establishment of any in the east, with Rajshahi College students at the forefront of the movement. Finally, Rajshahi was selected as the home for the second university in East Pakistan. Itrat Hossain Juberi, the Principal of Rajshahi College was appointed the first vice-chancellor of the university. Initially, the university was housed in temporary locations, such as the local circuit house and Bara Kuthi, a 16th century Dutch establishment. The university satretd with 20 faculty, 161 students (of which 5 were female) and six departments - Bengali, English, History, Law, Philosophy and Economics. In 1964, the offices moved to its permanent 746 acre campus.

The 1960s was a turbulent period in the history of Bangladesh, where demands for autonomy of East Pakistan was becoming stronger. The faculty and students of the university started playing an increasing role during this period. In February 18, 1969, Shamsuzzoha, a professor of the university was killed by the police when he tried to prevent them from shooting agitating students. This event is now commemorated as Teacher's Day in Bangladesh. During the 1971 war, the university campus was used as a base by the Pakistan Army.
