Black Sheets of Rain is the title of Bob Mould's second solo album after leaving Hüsker Dü. It featured the Modern Rock Top 10 hit "It's Too Late." The album returned to electric guitars, and features heavier arrangements than his largely acoustic solo debut, Workbook. Bassist Tony Maimone and drummer Anton Fier, both veterans of Pere Ubu (band), served as Mould's rhythm section on both albums.

Mould would take a detour from solo work for a few years as the leader of Sugar before coming out with his self-titled 1996 album.
