Yukio Ninagawa

Yukio Ninagawa (蜷川幸雄 Ninagawa Yukio, born October 15 1935) is a Japanese theatre director, particularly known for his Japanese language productions of Shakespeare plays and Greek tragedies. He has directed Hamlet numerous times.

Ninagawa was born in Saitama, near Tokyo.

Although most famous abroad for his touring productions of European classics, Ninagawa has also directed works based on contemporary writing from Japan, including the Modern Noh plays of Yukio Mishima (which toured to New York's Lincoln Center in early summer 2005) and several other plays by Japanese dramatists, including Shuji Terayama and Kunio Shimizu. His production of Titus Andronicus was performed in England in June 2006, at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford and the Theatre Royal in Plymouth.

Biography

In 1955 Ninagawa joined theatre company "Seihai" and left the group in 1967, setting up his own theatre company "Gendaijin-Gekijo" in the same year. He made his debut as a director in 1969 with Shinjo afururu keihakusa. After the establishment of theatre company "Sakura-sha" in 1972 and its disbandment in 1974, Ninagawa directed Romeo and Juliet for the first time which became his first production at a big theatre. Since then, he has become and continues to be one of the leading experts in the theatre world. He is long on news hooks such as the plan which began in 1998 of directing all Shakespearian plays, or directing Greeks in 2000 which lasted for a total of ten and a half hours.

Furthermore, beginning in 1983 with directing Medea, Ninagawa continues to do overseas expeditions every year, which adds to his high reputation from Europe, United States and Canada. In recent years he was spotlighted for presenting a play each year in London, three years in a row – Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1996, Shintoku-maru in 1997, and Hamlet in 1998. In addition he collaborated with the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1999 to 2000 and presented King Lear at London and Stratford-upon-Avon.

Ninagawa is highly award-winning in Japan, as well as conferred with an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh in 1992.

In his theatrical company "Ninagawa Studio (Ninagawa Company)", he continues to bring forth experimental productions with the young group members. Recently, in 2006, he founded a new theatrical group for people over 55 years old called "Saitama Gold Theatre", based at Saitama Arts Theatre.
