Suppressor T cell

There were debates over the existence of supressor cells, but recent years studies have confirmed a central role of suppressor cell populations in regulating immunity. Naturally occuring supressor T cells (renamed regulatory T cells - T reg) belongs to CD4+ subpopulation and express CD25+ (interleukin-2 IL-2 alpha chain), transcription factor FoxP and GITR (glucocorticoid-induced TBF receptor). They mature in thymus and comprise ~5-10% of the peripheral blood CD4+ helper T cell subpopulation in mice. Absence of T reg or its dysfunction is associated with severe autoimmunity and tumors. Normaly T reg exibit supresor-regulatory activity by TGF beta, interleukin-10 (IL-10) and direct acctions.
