A spin-off in television is a new series which contains either characters or theme elements from an old series. They are particularly common in situation comedy. For more information on the subject, see spin-off. A related phenomenon not to be confused with the spin-off, is the crossover.

Many, if not all spinoffs, are produced by some of the original producers of the root show.

Criteria for a television spin-off

Before a television show can be considered a spin-off, it has to match the following criteria:

  • It cannot be a remake of a pre-existing show (e.g. The Battlestar Galactica series of 2003 is not spun off from the one made in 1978). The exception can be made to series such as The Transformers where the lines of continuity are blurred at best.
  • The crossover cannot have taken place after the show was created (e.g. Friends is not a spin-off from Mad About You as the characters met after both shows were created).
  • Spin-offs are only for shows that existed. If a pilot was written but never shot, it is not considered a spin-off.
  • Some people make a distinction between Spin-offs that take established characters from one TV series and give them their own show (e.g. Frasier from Cheers) and Spin-offs that introduce a character to one show just so that that character can anchor a new show (e.g. "Horatio Cane" appearing on one episode of CSI before the premiere of CSI: Miami) The first are often called "True Spin-Offs" while the second are classified as "Engineered", "Stunt", or "Phoney".
