The Benecol® ingredient (plant stanol ester) is produced from stanols and vegetable oil extracts. Stanol occurs naturally in corn, wheat, rye and other plants - although in small quantities, and is known to reduce cholesterol over time with continued use. Combining stanol with vegetable oil extracts, using Raisio's patented process, creates plant stanol ester which is an ideal ingredient to be added to a wide variety of food products.

More than 40 random, clinical trials have shown that Benecol®, plant stanol ester lowers total serum cholesterol by up to 10% and reduces serum LDL (bad) cholesterol by up to 15%.
