Cathedral of La Laguna
The Cathedral of La Laguna is a Roman Catholic church in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, on the Spanish island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. The church was designated a cathedral in 1818 and is the seat of the Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, which includes the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. The current building was constructed between 1904 and 1915 to replace an earlier building begun in 1515. The cathedral is located in the historic centre of La Laguna and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999 by UNESCO. It contains elements of several architectural styles and is noted for its Neoclassical facade, inspired by Pamplona Cathedral, as well as its dome, which stands out prominently in the city landscape. In the cathedral lie the remains of Alonso Fernández de Lugo, the conqueror of the island and founder of the La Laguna. This photograph shows one of the side chapels of the Cathedral of La Laguna, with a 6-metre-tall (20 ft) gilded reredos behind the altar. Constructed in the Baroque style in the first half of the 18th century, the reredos is the largest in the Canary Islands. The chapel is dedicated to the Virgin of Los Remedios, whose statue is in the central niche behind the altar. The reredos features seven paintings, attributed to Hendrick van Balen, depicting scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary.Photograph credit: Diego Delso

Possible sockpuppet or plain old troll...

Hi, I'm not sure but the user [[1]] 86.144.25.171 seems to be making a few ridiculous additions to various articles. I wonder if you could check them out please? -Mirjay 18:16, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A sock puppet is where an user edits under more than one account. I don't see any evidence of that. All I see is a anonymous IP who's unfamiliar with Wikipedia:Neutral point of view rules and committing borderline vandalism. Just follow Wikipedia:Vandalism for instructions on how to deal with such cases in future. Just curious, but why are you asking me for help? I'm not an administrator and I don't think I've chatted with you before. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  18:37, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks for the anti-vandalism link. I simply asked 'you' to look into it because you dealt with a sock puppet that was imitating various users and posting remarks under their id's, me being one of them. -Mirjay 04:32, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I just noticed your addition to my talk page! Thanks for the "Welcome to Wikipedia" message and the useful links - it's great to have them all in one place. I tend to get completely lost when I search for such articles. :) Mirjay 04:49, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That IP you just warned at Girl Authority? I blocked him for a day. RyanGerbil10(The people rejoice!) 06:57, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think you'll need to semi-protect the page for 24 hours. I think a forum somewhere issued a challenge. *sigh*. There's just too many IPs all doing the same thing on it to be the usual vandalism. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  07:00, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
One step ahead of you. I sprotected it. It makes me feel warm to know I ruined their fun :) RyanGerbil10(The people rejoice!) 07:05, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for blocking whoever it was that was posting all that junk. It really makes me feel bad when people like that try to destroy others' hard work like that. When I saw all that stupidity posted, I wanted to give the vandal a piece of my mind, but decided against it. It probably wouldn't have made much difference. And anyway, if the vandal dislikes Girl Authority that much, then maybe he or she should create an anti-Girl Authority website. But hopefully, it's all over now. So thanks again! Fanficgurl 5:17. 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi Aferwerda, just a note that the 365mag article currently reads like an advertisement and does not cite any third party references or sources. Please see Wikipedia:Neutral point of view and Wikipedia:Notability (web) for notes on how you should improve this article or else it may be nominated for deletion by other editors for not complying with Wikipedia standards. I'll be glad to help you if you have any queries, just leave a reply under my message on this page. Thanks,  Netsnipe  (Talk)  13:24, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

cheers mate, I will edit it so it is more objective. Thanks for the comment. regards from Amsterdam, A —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Aferwerda (talkcontribs) 14:25, 7 August 2006 (UTC.

Copyvios

Thank you for tagging all those copyvios! Keep 'em coming and I'll delete them. --Fang Aili talk 14:26, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I'm going insane having to tag all of them. Could you please keep count of all db-copyvios I've filed so far? They're all by Paul Arnott (talkcontribs) whom I going to be warning with a two-by-four at this rate. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  14:40, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just warned him again. If he creates another one I'll block him. You can look at my delete log, and all the "A8"s are probably ones you tagged. --Fang Aili talk 14:42, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Liner Notes

Thanks, I wasn't sure if I could put them up or not. --Gth0824 15:40, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A redirect to Pixar is bit of a stretch. It's more like typosquatting to me since Paxar has nothing to do with Pixar. I'd rather you delete Paxar and protect it from recreation. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  16:21, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, you're right. I've deleted it, but I'd rather not protect it--I try not to protect pages unless it's absolutely necessary. This is so that if someone wants to create a legit article, it's possible. Let me know if it's recreated again with the copyvio info, and I'll protect it then. Thanks for writing me about this. --Fang Aili talk 16:26, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please rewrite this article to comply with Wikipedia's Neutral Point of View policy or else it may be nominated for deletion in the near future. It currently reads like a self-promotional mission statement rather than an encyclopedia entry. If you need help, please leave a message on my talk page. You have also failed to provide any context to readers who are not American. Please remember that Wikipedia is an international project. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  19:12, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note; does this look ok? --Kawanazii 19:27, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it does now. Thanks for listening. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  20:11, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The tag that was removed by User:70.134.108.151 was a proposed deletion tag, not a speedy one; it's removal was the proper procedure. I'm sure your edit was just a mistake. --Maxamegalon2000 17:41, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Doh! Mistake noted. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  20:38, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed that your username is Sandom and that you are editing an article about yourself. That poses a huge problem as the Wikipedia:Autobiography guidelines strongly urge you not to write about yourself in Wikipedia as it poses significant conflict of interest and neutral point of view problems. Please be VERY careful about our neutral point of view and vanity policies as linked at the top of this page as breaching them will result in your autobiography being nominated for deletion. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  17:52, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

After viewing a "Requires Citation" note on the entry for my name (following an entry disagreement with Fang!), I tried to insert the proper citations but was unable to operate the footnote function properly. Can you help? I can send you the edited page with the citations if you'd like.Sandom 17:58, 9 August 2006 (UTC)J.G. Sandom[reply]

Follow the steps at Wikipedia:Cite_sources. I've done so for you already. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  18:10, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't write this article. But once it was posted, I thought I would update it. And since I saw a note to add citations, I thought I'd try and help out. Was this wrong?

J. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sandom (talkcontribs) .

Not inherently. But some editors (as I did) would have automatically assumed that 68.38.12.54 (the anonymous person who started the article) and User:Sandom were one and the same. Anoymous accounts don't have much credibility around here. But since you've provided third-party sources to establish your notability, then the article is fine to stay. Just don't be tempted into turning the article into your own soapbox to promote yourself and you'll hopefully stay on the right side of WP:AUTO and WP:VAIN. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  18:25, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Netsnipe. A quick use of Google should validate my pedigree. I have my own blogs/sites to crow about myself. LOL!

Er. I understand the prohibition aganst "advertising". But some of the stuff on this page is right out of my work with, no credit given. I would like to be able to cite it. Also, I link to a published paper, the full text of which is on my website.

Peter H Proctor, PhD, MD —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pproctor (talkcontribs) .

Wikipedia has a major problem with Google bombing and a lot of people try to add their own websites to articles to increase their online profile. But seeing as your site doesn't have any ads on them, your intentions are probably more honorable than most others. Feel free to restore your links, but Wikipedia does prefers content over links. Baldness treatments is an absolute mess right now and when I have some free time I'm going to have to weed out half of it since most of it seems to be advertising rather than references to proper peer-reviewed medical journals and papers. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  21:18, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Wikipedia does prefers content over links." There seems not to be much consistency in this. When I try to edit the Raymond Damadian entry, everybody demands links (which I give) and reverts what I have written, probably because they don't like it-- I was a witness to the early days of MRI, a very controversial area. Sigh, ya just can't win. Pproctor 21:42, 9 August 2006 (UTC) Dr P Re: Baldness treatment Understand about the advertising business. I have posted a link to the pubmed abstract of one of my published reviews. I may scan it and put up a link. One problem is that little if anything gets published on new agents for hair loss treatment. This is because most everything gets patented. So the patent literature is where to look. Also, the drug companies have essentially abandoned this area because the two approved agents (minoxiidl and finasteride) have not been very profitable. So new studies are mostly absent. As for Google bombing-- I have a couple thousand links to my site. One more or less does not matter. There are a couple from wikipedia, on non-commercial science matters. My understanding is that more than one link from a given domain does not help with Google anyway. Dr P —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pproctor (talkcontribs) .[reply]

Tupperware

Hi, thank you for the feedback. It was quite funny at the time but it is difficult to refer to what one hears on TV. Like a few weeks ago on the new SABC morning programme World Today "Brent Crude Oil was going for X dollars per ounce". I know the Queen was being serious about her favourite container for storing breakfast cereal, but I shall have to research Tupperware jokes to find a reference to the South African story. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Gregorydavid (talkcontribs) 08:11, 11 August 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Oh really?

Can't blank my user page, huh? Then why does WP policy state However, reverting such removals or redirects is not proper and may result in a block for edit warring.?

There is nothing of significant importance that I've removed from my user talk page, and I've been following WP rules strictly. By giving me a warning that is completely unwarranted as I've stated above, you're being hostile and I will give you a warning again if you attack me without contacting me for details of whatever I may have done, as that's uncivil. I'll remove your warning and not give you one this time -- but read up on WP policy and discuss what's on your mind before jumping to conclusions and placing unwarranted warnings. Right result on the AfD, but could you please not invoke WP:SNOW in closes if you choose to do them in the future? WP:SNOW isn't a legitimate rationale to close AfDs, and it would hold more weight in the future if you used something with a more legitimate rationale (for instance, WP:POINT). Just a personal thing of mine, thanks. --badlydrawnjeff talk 15:38, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! --badlydrawnjeff talk 15:54, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for you sharing your concerns. In hindsight WP:SNOW does reflect badly on us to outsiders so I should probably avoid using it ever again, but it is a really convenient piece of jargon for saying "there's no point discussing this further because everyone else disagrees with you" that I've seen a few other AFD regulars cite before in the past. Perhaps WP:SNOW should be rewritten so that it doesn't read as blunt as it does now. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  15:56, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm with you, but it's been a failing battle. I've found the best way is to point it out, a few people are hostile about it, but most get it. Glad you have an open mind, though, keep it up. --badlydrawnjeff talk 15:58, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

AFD Sockpuppet Templates

Those templates that you put into the Mini Mammoth AFD for users who had not made other contributions - what is the code? ViridaeTalk 14:42, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There isn't one! Though I probably should create one. I'll get back to you when I do. Need to think about the wording and linking first to be as impartial as possible. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  16:02, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if you are just a Basque nationalist or you don't know anything about Spain, but historical Basque Country (Euskal Herria) is supported only by nationalists and terrorists, and the existence of that country is just an invention, because the only historical name for that region (including other lands) is the Kingdom of Navarre.

Supporting that idea in Wikipedia is just an insult to victims and a historical falsehood, like Aryan race (read a little about Sabino Arana, please).

Yes, I saw it, and it looked much like other AfDs where 'external pressures' complicate things. Nevertheless, I think that that previous AfD was readily closeable by any reasonably experienced admin. Furthermore, there was very little by way of actual vandalism, and WP:SEMI makes very clear that it is not to be used to specifically reduce anonymous editing, nor to be used as a preemptive strike. The current AfD, since I unprotected it, has been blissfully quiet so it doesn't need protection at the moment. This can always change of course, but the appearance of a few 'new editors' doesn't justify locking them all out completely; they can comment if they want to, and the closing admin should take careful note of how things progress. -Splash - tk 13:05, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fang, could you double check Mike Ingalls for me? I just realised it wasn't the author's (User:Rosencomet) first article so it might not have been a db-bio after all. I do however remember seeing an (aka nickname) in it though. Thanks,  Netsnipe  (Talk)  17:12, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy. It was "Mike Ingalls (AKA Lyrus Landholder or Puf)" etc. Actually looking over this again this guy might have a claim to notability. If the creator objects I'll restore it. --Fang Aili talk 17:15, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd rather not at this point. This guy is creating a lot of articles of questionable notability. I don't feel like going through them right now though. I'm getting off the 'puter for a bit. --Fang Aili talk 17:24, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for looking into that and getting it cleaned up! --Fang Aili talk 18:27, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Netsnipe,

First of all, no, I am not Mike Ingalls. I am the director of a group that has hosted appearances by Mike many times over the last 25 years. I was introduced to Wikipedia by someone who had seen a very incorrect listing about one of the events I facilitate, and after posting corrections I noticed that many authors, lecturers, and musicians that I thought were quite worthy of having listings (comparing them to others who were already listed) had no entries. Being the author of our event catalog and having handy short bios on many of these folks, I decided to post the most recent info I had on them as a courtesy. These are not, in my opinion, vanity listings, but actual short biographical sketches of authors and entertainers of interest.

I hope to expand some of the listings and keep them up to date with new data as I receive it, which is usually when I book them next. In a few cases, I've simply added a bit to existing listings, such as an additional college degree, award, or a new book or CD produced.

I don't think I've violated the Wikipedia guidelines. These are professional folks, usually published or with their art/music produced, often internationally celebrated. I'd say Mike Ingalls is near the low end of noteriety among the listings I've posted, It's true, but I haven't finished checking all his credits. He has been a professional classical musician and a paid speaker on a number of subjects, and did record on the album Neandir: Lady of the Flame with Victoria Ganger and Ian Corrigan. He has appeared on television as a performer, and may have more to his credit. I will follow up on it.

In any event, my purpose was to give the Wikipedia community the benefit of my store of short biographical sketches, mostly just a paragraph long. They seemed tailor-made for the purpose, and quite a diverse collection: New Age, Magickal, Counter-Cultural, Art & Music of many types, the Healing Arts, World Spirituality, and more. I will keep an eye to the guidelines, but please be aware of my good intentions, and that I might either expand a somewhat sparse-looking listing within a week of its appearance or encourage the listed person (or someone from a listed group) to update me on their specifics. I'm just trying to be helpful in the spirit of the good work I see being done here.

Ad Astra, Rosencomet Rosencomet 17:47, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Netsnipe,

None of the people I have listed work for ACE or for me. I don't think this is a conflict of interest. If someone who works for the Grammy Awards saw the Wikipedia listings and made it a personal project to help by submitting short informative paragraphs about past Grammy winners, or someone involved with the Parliment of World Religions thought you might like short descriptions of people who have spoken there in the past, would you consider it an asset or a conflict?

ACE is a labor of love. It has no employees, and all income goes directly to programming; no one takes a share for themselves. Many of the people I've listed have not appeared at one of our events for years, and some are no longer alive. I'm not trying to promote ACE or any event (except that I updated the descriptions of our two biggest events) nor trying to promote the careers of anyone. I'm just trying to do what it looks like you are doing: provide data I happen to have ready in a concise form on people of interest, past and present.

I have no stake in Patricia Telesco's career. I don't know if she'll ever speak at one of our events again. I didn't check what her present contact info is, and she doesn't work for us. But she's a well-respected author in her field, and a popular public speaker, and I thought I'd share that information.

The same goes for musicians like Matthew Abelson and Badal Roy, and Jay Stevens (who co-wrote a book with Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead) and Steve Blamires (author of three well-respected books on Celtic Spirituality). I'm not their agent, or their employer, and they're not members of the group I work with. But I was impressed with their work, and they are well-known in their communities, and we would not have been interested in them if they were not significant contributers to their fields.

Believe me, there are HUNDREDS of people who have spoken or performed at ACE events that I would not bother listing on Wikipedia, because although they may have put together a nice presentation from books they read, they are NOT leaders or shapers of their fields. The people I posted are folks that your audience will search for; many were mentioned in your listings (like Macha Nightmare and Patricia Telesco) but you had no specific listing for them, just as co-authors of books or colaborators on projects with others you did have listed. Well, now you've got a little info on them as well. Isn't that the point?

Before you decide that these folks are not equal to many others you have gladly included, please do a search on their names. Maybe I didn't give a revealing-enough description, but I just went with what I had. I may not have done them justice; I'm new at this.

But please don't delete them simply because you suspect I have some sort of ulterior motive if the individual is worthy of inclusion. I tried to be careful to post only some pertinent factual data about what the person is best known for, not advertising copy describing them with glowing terms. I just said a few things about who they are and what they've done. I have not peppered these listings with external links to our website nor suggested that their services or works are available from us. I just wanted to do them, and your audience, a favor by providing an introduction, since I was in the position to do it easily.

And I'm just about at the end of my list, if that helps your decision.

Ad Astra, Rosencomet Rosencomet 21:02, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi TruthbringerToronto, I know we keep crossing paths on AFD (I'm starting to think I'm a deletionist) I have to admire your tenactiy as an inclusionist and I have to admit that your stance is many, many times harder than mine to maintain.

I've just noticed you think Patricia Telesco is worth saving, so I would like to ask you to review some of the other biographies Rosencomet has created recently. Rosecomet is a director of the new age Starwood Festival [2] and most of the people she has written about are guest speakers at the festival, so I'm a bit concerned about impartiality in the biographies and being able to verify their notability. More details are Rose's talk page and mine. If you have time, could you please also go through the rest of them and see if you can improve them while I deal with real-life over the next 24 hrs. Thank you for the note. I will look at the articles that you mentioned. One of the ways I verify the work of an American author is to check listings for their books at the Library of Congress catalog at http://catalog.loc.gov

You are correct to worry about bias, given the source of the articles. I will treat these articles in the same way that I would an article about a company submitted by an employee of the company, which is to try to expand the article and put facts into context using verifiable third-party information, while watching out for copyvio and overly-enthusiastic prose. At the end of the process, either there is a good article, or it's clear that the article ought to be deleted. TruthbringerToronto (Talk | contribs) 02:30, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DinoHunter

See WP:ANI#Universe_Daily.2FToday.2FBad_Astronomy_spam_again for information I've posted. This is a prolific spammer I've been tracking the last week or two. His latest tactic is that his spam links are framed (like a page with a transclusion of another page) to real webpages. I check his spam links almost daily anymore, he has a constant stream of sockpuppets, stretching back a long time. Many known spam links are at Category:Wikipedia:Sock_puppets_of_Universe_Daily if you wish to see. I have no idea who the User:Yale s guy was, but he compiled nearly all his spam links back in late july. Sorry its not apparently anymore, since he's gotten a lot more sneaky. Thanks, but  (aeropagitica)  (talk)  inspired me first. By the way, you really shouldn't be using the <font> tag anymore. It's been deprecated and replaced with <span>. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  15:46, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
