Wolle Chekol (1941-2005) was born in Gojam, Ethiopia. He completed elementary and secondary education in Gojam and earned his BA degree in economics from Haile Selassie I University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with distinction.

Chekol served as a junior expert in the then development commission of Ethiopia and went on to get his second degree, a MA in Economics from Center for Development Economics, Massachusetts, USA.
