Hutton Grammar School

Hutton Grammar School is an all-boys Church of England voluntary aided comprehensive school in North West England located just outside the city of Preston Lancashire in the village of Hutton. It consists of a main school for pupils aged between 11-16 and a 6th-form school for students aged 16-19.

The School can trace its antecedents back to 1552, and the grammar school in Longton. The school moved to its Hutton site in 1742. During the last century it was a direct-grant boys' grammar school, but in the 1970s was forced to accept a comprehensive intake.

The schools absence record is the same as the National Average. Although there is no selection at eleven, the School retains its traditional grammar school ethos, which enables it to produce KS3 and GCSE results which are amongst the highest in the area.{{factlink titlehttp://www.dfes.gov.uk/cgi-bin/performancetables/dfekx2_05.pl?Mode=Z&No=888&Base=b&X=1&Type=}} Its position lies just behind the selective grammar schools of Lancashire, and its results can outstrip those of independent schools.

In recent years, the buildings have fallen into a state of disrepair. In 2003, under Head teacher Thomas Bennett, major work began on the building of a new gym and new Maths facilities, and classrooms throughout have been extensively redecorated. The new headteacher, Mr. Pearson, has overseen the construction of new houses on the land owned by the site, and the money generated has enabled the school to build a sports hall, maths and languages block, and new ICT facilities. There are also plans to improve the drama provision at the school.

In September 2005, new maths facilities were completed and opened to the students. Previously mathematical studies had taken place in prefabricated buildings. Following the opening of the new maths suites in the autumn of 2005, the buildings were used for housing of the resistant materials and art until the end of the academic year 2006 while their departments were being refurbished. The buildings are due for demolition in the months of July and August. In July 2006 the new music suite has been opened and is a great improvement. Flat panel PC's etc. Also at the end of the 2006 academic year Mr Oddie (Head of PE) is leaving the school after nearly 30 years at the school - he will be greatly missed by many. The school is now extending the sixth form block for extra capacity and an interior refurbishment which is much needed and deserved by the students.
