Volunteer Gliding Squadrons
A Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS) is a Royal Air Force flying training unit, operating either military Viking T Mk1 Conventional Gliders or the Vigilant T Mk1 Touring Motor Gliders. The VGSs operate under the administration of the Air Cadet Organisation, but come under the Royal Air Force Training Group of the Headquarters Personnel and Training Command.
The 27 current VGS Units are managed by Officers commissioned into the Training Branch of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, but the Instructors comprise a mixture of regular RAF/RN/Army personnel along with reservists, honorary civilians and Flight Staff Cadets.
The role of the VGS is to provide elementary flying training, to the Air Cadets of the Combined Cadet Force and the Air Training Corps (these include Gliding Induction Courses, Gliding Scholarships and Advanced Glider Training), and Basic Pilot Training (Grade Levels 2 and 1).
