Am I to take it that this is an indication of refusal to mediate? It would be most helpful if you would indicate as much on Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, at least as a courtesy to the Mediation Committee. Essjay (Talk) 00:12, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Help with a few ignorant and stubborn people
Sorry to be bothering you Ragib but it seems there are forces out there that try to keep facts in check through their own take on history. Case in point seems to be a certain user RedArrow who despite my best attempts to provide a balanced view of the Atlantique Incident and despite Bharatveer's reverts on the article keeps moving back to his own version despite lack of neutral sources. Moreover he takes this flawed version to the Pakistan Navy too and argues that the PNS Ghazi somehow "singlehanndedly blockaded" the entire Western Naval fleet based on one source - Defence Journal - a Pakistani military publication. Despite trying to provide contradictory evidence or the lack thereof, in the talk pages he refuses to accept it accusing me of POV etc.
Additionally you might want to take a look at (and keep it in your watchlist) Richard Nixon where User:Rjensen origianlly claimed the 1971 genocide and the relevant recordings on Nixon and Kissinger were "original research" then after a glance at the BBC article seemed to change the entire wordings to suit his needs. Please assist. Tx --Idleguy 18:40, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- Hi again Ragib. It seems I too had violated the 3RR. :| But in the Richard Nixon article, you have actually warned the lesser of the two problematic editors, i.e. Cripipper instead of Rjensen who has been blatantly adding fake history when the source given says otherwise. This diff says "Nixon was reluctant to give any vocal support" when the source says they provided military assistance. I'm restoring only the select paragraph instead of reverting. I hope that's not a problem. Idleguy 02:00, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- btw, the Atlantique Incident and Pakistan Navy remain unreverted with a propagandist version on events. I've provided neutral sources like TIME and orbat.com among others but it seem like banging on a brick wall when I try to point that this link says nowhere "stolen" debris of the plane as he keeps insisting. Same situation with the PN page. Idleguy 02:25, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- If you can spare some time, try looking at Richard Nixon page histories where despite providing sources he keeps claiming that the 71 genocide was first "Indian claim" then "media reports". It seems he has little grasp on the events of the 71 war but being a staunch pro-Nixon fan seems to put him on a pedastal. After I made so many edits to enlarge the perspective he now has tagged it as POV since he seemed to have been offended by so much bad publicity. I've also reported User:RedaRRow for 3RR but it seems he is blatantly misquoting sources and blindly reverting any edits of mine, even ones attempted to reach a compromise. Please take some time to resolve these issues since I myself am constrained by time. Idleguy 13:47, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- Nonsense: I have been adding correct history. The article is about Nixon and it should explain his policies, not be used as a launch pad to vent Indian hatreds of Pakistan--and Indian resentlment that Nixon privately called Indira a witch! The issue as Nixon explained was how to avoid war and help the refugees, while keeping a strong American ally. This is not the article to discuss the atrocities -- it is about American policies. Atanveer9
Ragib,
Are you Wikipedia employee or just a user? I am still confused what gives you the right to delete any new entry without event understanding the content.
I am adding a new entry to define the term BDEvents which has recently been a talk topic between all Bangladeshis in USA. It is not a company nor a profit sharing website. It is just a community and forum like BNP or Jatiya Party.
Not sure how much you understand of that and why you delete any further entry.
So for curiosity my question is, are you employed by wikipedia (so have been asked to protect any new term) or you just get notified for anything to do with bangladesh? How does it work? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Atanveer9 (talk • contribs)
- Wikipedia doesn't have "employees" per se, rather it is built with a worldwide group of volunteer editors. A task for them is to detect advertising, hoax, and spam. Wikipedia also has a group of administrators who are authorized to remove content. I edit Bangladesh related articles extensively, and noted your spam to several pages. Wikipedia is not the place to promote your website, no matter what the goals of your site is. Thank you. --Ragib 18:25, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I'm assuming you know that most of the edits that User:Duncharris reverts are mine. He's accused me of trolling, and I'd like to make my position on this clear, before anyone starts blocking me for incivility or the like. You're impartial, so I feel it'd be best to make my case here, on your talk page.
Duncharris sometimes makes his views felt rather strongly on some topics, notably railways and pseudoscience. I myself am a bit of a railway buff, so on some edits we can clash slightly. When we do, I try to stay calm, and I leave a civil note on his talk page, which gets promptly reverted. Some of his edit summaries, notably [1], [2], [3] and [4] can get a little grating at times, so I leave him a warning, which again gets promptly reverted, followed by edits on Greenfinch's talk page, removing my notice on edit summaries, and removing cleanup tags I placed at here and here(both of which on articles I often watch for vandalism, and which he has never before edited). The most recent note I left was on this edit summary, which frankly in my opinion was uncalled for. I admit at times I have been less than civil, but I hope you can see where I'm coming from.
I don't expect you to do anything about this, but I hope this at least shows my viewpoint on matters. Thankyou HawkerTyphoon 19:43, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- I don't know and don't want to know about whatever disagreement or issues exist between Dunc and you, but in any case, if you feel his actions are improper, please make a note at Admin's noticeboard or Admin's noticeboard/Incidents. Thanks. --Ragib 19:48, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Bengali novels-Help needed
Hi Ragib Bhai, I have created above mentioned article but have failed to cite the references in the right place. I mentioned the reference in the bottom, but how to refer to it? Would you please have a look?
- Please see WP:CITE to see the ref-styled references. You can also check out pages like Bangladesh to see how these are used. --Ragib 05:20, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
Furthermore, After completion of writing this article, I want to add zist of it into Bengali literature. Is it possible? Thanks - Auyon 14:01, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- Sure, that's the style preferred in wiki .... i.e. move specific info to its own article, and add the summary to the parent article, and link to the child using the {{main article}} tag. --Ragib 05:20, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
Stamps
Hello. I read your comments on fair use stamps. I am not very clear about the fair-use issue yet. For example Image:Bhatkhandestamp.jpg was removed from the article Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. I had uploaded the image to "to illustrate the stamp in question". I put the image to illustrate the sentence "The Posts and Telegraph Department of India also paid homage to Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande by releasing, on 1 September, 1961, a commemorative stamp portraying Bhatkhande. That particular date was chosen as it was Janmashtami on that day.". The sentence was in the death and legacy section. There cannot exist free images of a stamp and it will come in public domain after many years. So there doesn't exist any way to illustrate the stamp in question. Isn't that a valid fair use? - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 07:47, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- Well, the image description page for the image you mentioned above does not have the fair use rationale. If you do refer to the stamp in the text (not a one liner, but at least something more than that), and use the stamp image right there, the stamp usage may be justifiable under "Fair use".
- I myself added a lot of stamp images to articles in the past. However, I had a discussion with another user over this, which led me to read the guideline in detail. Many of the stamps are used in article as yet another image to illustrate the subject. Just adding a caption like "Postage stamp of <insert country name> to commemorate <insert person name>" isn't an argument for fair use of the stamp image. Unless the text has specific, non-trivial mention of the stamp, it should not be used. "Fair use" is a very vague criteria, and it is better not to walk the thin red line ... if we are to keep wikipedia as free as we want it to be. Thanks. --Ragib 22:38, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- This image survived the deletion. Now I know why. Ragib, Thanks for the explanation. - Ganeshk (talk) 22:45, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- Not sure why Image:Baba Kanshi Ram.jpg had a problem. It had a fairuse rationale and was illustrating the person in question. Ragib, can you please advise? - Ganeshk (talk) 23:05, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- As I said above, stamps are allowed *only to illustrate the stamp, not the subject*. So, stamps are perfectly ok in philatellic articles. However, when it comes to biography pages of the subject, claiming it is fair use to have the stamp is questionable. I looked into the article, the stamp is not at all the focus of the article. So, the stamp you mentioned would have been ok in something like "Indian postage stamps on freedom fighters", but can't be used just by saying "India issued a stamp on him <stamp image>" in the article text. It is sort of like the Time magazine covers issue. It is better to have the article free under GFDL rather than have a "fair use" image, where the usage may become questionable. Thanks. --Ragib 23:53, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. I think I got the point now. I will make it a point to add fair-use image only if there is a real need for it. You can go ahead and delete the image. Cheers. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 05:09, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Ishwar Gupta article
The Bengali script on the article shows up as a line of question marks. I made a Hindi version of his name but since I can't read/write/ or speak Bengali (my mom is from Calcutta so I understand it) could you see if you can get the Bengali script to display? Bakaman Bakatalk 23:32, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
- The Bengali script appears fine to me, because I have the related Bangla unicode fonts (Interestingly, these are installed by default with WinXP service pack 2). You can of course install some fonts from http://www.ekushey.org . Let me know if you need any help with that. Thanks. --Ragib 23:34, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
- Actually I can't read or write Bengali, only Devanagari. The thing I noticed was that the Beangli fonts don't display while Devanagari fonts do.Bakaman Bakatalk 15:24, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
RfC
Since you are an admin, I request you to take a look at HolyWarrior's (I saw your discussion with Blnguyen so I scrapped the "conspiracy theory". I found out you also felt his wrath so sorry for accusing you.) RfC he filed on me [6]. Half the diffs don't pertain to me. He also is conniving with another user to (possibly) get me blocked [7]. He has a nice and colorful record of personal attacks and now is harrassing me. I also showed this to Rama's Arrow who said the RfC had no case and was improperly made.Bakaman Bakatalk 03:28, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi there Ragib. Since you have some awareness of these matters, you are welcome to give your opinions on the conduct of Holywarrior, BhaiSaab, Bakasuprman, and Subhash_bose recently, as there is a long long discussion which may be a bit complex, so it would be good to see if there is something I've gotten confused or made a worng call on (I've spent at least 6-7 hours in the last two days studying all the shenanigans). Thanks, Blnguyen | rant-line 05:20, 9 August 2006 (UTC).
- User:BhaiSaab (the one trying to get me blocked) has put a case on the Wp:AN board [8] . Many of these edits came before I learned what Wp:NPA even was. Some were from my first edits ever on Wiki, even before I was welcomed by thunderboltz. He has been digging through my CONTRIBUTIONS for any thing he can get his hands on.Since I apologized to the attacks I made on you above I feel they are null. I also worked out my problems with User:Hornplease. I have decided to spend less time arguing and more time contributing like on the (Bengal history pages). The admininstrator who BhaiSaab contacted for the case became hostile when I confronted him about how BhaiSaab never notified me of any case.[9] I would like to have time to contribute but these Rfc, Rfa and all this garbage has been sapping my time. Since I found out Holywarrior also attacked you, I value your input on this attack. Bakaman Bakatalk 21:51, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

how does one figure out article sizes? I was thinking abt attempting to improve RU, and am thinking this should probably be a shortish 25kb thing--ppm 18:30, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- It shows up at the top of the edit box. But good article sizes are near 36-46 KB range.--Ragib 18:48, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- that's just it. it doesn't (seemingly) if the article is too small.--ppm 16:04, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Banglapedia
The site Banglapedia seems to be a really good resource for Bengal related articles. Just thought I'd share it with you. Bakaman Bakatalk 01:35, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Banglapedia is the national encyclopedia of Bangladesh. It is not, technically, created by the govt, rather it was funded by the Govt and other organizations, and created by university and college professors, scholars, intellectuals under the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. The search.com.bd site is actually a mirror ... a lot of them sprang up after Banglapedia released their content on CD. --Ragib 01:43, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Oh, that explains quite a bit. Its a great site, I got a lot of info on 19th century and stuff from there. Bakaman Bakatalk 04:04, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
On the Vangiya Sahitya Parishad article, it says the Maharaja donated 7 ""kathas" of land. Do you know what a katha is? I felt it was a notable fact so I rewrote on the Wiki page, but I would like to know the measure of a katha.Bakaman Bakatalk 17:21, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
- Katha is a measure of land used in Bengal. 1 katha = 720 square feet. 1 bigha = 20 katha = 14,400 square feet. See [10] for more details. --Ragib 17:25, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Question and Answer in Indian Parliament is not copy right of any News Paper vkvora 05:10, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
- No, but the presentation of the text (i.e. the news report itself, and the text structure/sentence/presentation therein) *is*. You could simply have written it in your own words. Copypasting a copyrighted news item is copyright violation. Thanks. --Ragib 05:12, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Sandesh
Yeah, a lot of websites I found said paneer [11], [12]. Also the channa side has a large amount of recipes too. Is the chana version more prevalent? Bakaman Bakatalk 18:04, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Hmmm, it appears that I was mistaken ... it IS made from a form of cottage cheese. Sorry about that (never made sandesh ... only a big fan of it :D ). --Ragib 18:07, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Actually we could say it is also made from chana. I found many recipes calling for chana. I'll say "Some recipes of Sandesh call for the use of Chana instead of Paneer" Bakaman Bakatalk 18:09, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
- Banglapedia shows regional variants of Sandesh made from mawa or dried milk, and dried curd too. --Ragib 18:11, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
- Could you tell me the correct code to cite references at the bottom of the page? On the Sandesh Page I typed the three sites that I got info from again (as references) but they showed up as links #4,5,6 instead of showing the #1,2,3. Bakaman Bakatalk 01:28, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

RE : population of muslims in india
At least, the population figure for East Pakistan (1971) stated above is *wrong*. The population of independent Bangladesh, according to the 1974 census, was 71.3 million [8]. Even considering the large number of Bengalis (between 1-1.5 million) (both Hindu and Muslims) killed by Pakistan Army in Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, the number was never above 75 million at that time. The population of west pakistan was lower than this, as Bengalis were 56% of the population of united pakistan. --Ragib 20:47, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
On my part i found the information from some old arcives from the liaquat national library here in karachi and the arcives were official pakistani documents of the time.
never the less according to cia world fact book the bangladeshi population is 147,365,352 (July 2006 est.) and the pakistani population is 165,803,560 (July 2006 est.) so how do we explain this — Preceding unsigned comment added by Madman 0014 (talk • contribs)
Well, the 1974 census IS an official, scientific document, and definitely that contradicts whatever stats you have. As for the current estimate, are you asking me why Pakistani population is larger than that of Bangladesh? Perhaps population control and family planning activities are not as successful in Pakistan as they are in Bangladesh? The population growth rate figures suggest just that. Thanks. --Ragib 08:15, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
what iam saying is that due to differnt political resons the population is shown more or less wether it be pakistan, bangladesh or india my real question was on the muslim population of india? --User:Madman_0014

Renaissance
Just like the renaissance in europe was from the 1300-1500's the Bengali renaissance (At least in my view) was at least from Ram Mohan Roy times (Early 1800's) to Independence (1947) when Bengal was split in two. The period, (at least to my understanding) was a time for the intellectual flowering of Bengali people, and I'm certain Kazi Nasrul was a major contributor to bengali literature. As for SC Chattopadhyay, he was in the same time period with Tagore, and since Tagore was an undisputed force in the renaissance, I added SC by association.Bakaman Bakatalk 23:50, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
- It says Nasrul fell into depression in 1941. Also, people like Tagore contributed well into the 1940's. Nasrul, as the wiki page says, made most of his contribs in the 20's, thereby keeping him in the "early twentieth century". Bakaman Bakatalk 23:56, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
Hi Ragib, can u guide me?
Hi Ragib,
Pinaki here. I introduce myself as a multilingual author, writing both in Bengali and English. I have 5 published books (publisher Dey's Publishing of Kolkata) in Bengali, 2 of which became bestsellers. I am also noted in Kolkata as being the first person in India to launch Bengali language greeting cards (brand Swapner Karkhana created by me. Being a designer & copywriter I design most of the releases myself. I am also a very regular writewr of well known Indian Bengali magazines like Sananda and Unish Kuri. My site is www.pinaki.bravehost.com
It seems you have read books of my father, Prabir Ghosh; the rationalist. I am presently writing ebooks, webcontent etc in English, for clients from US, UK and Germany. Why I am writing al these is that I saw your note about my father and became interested about you and studied your achievements. They are fantastic!!! Can you guide me and let me know, how I can become a wikipedia official editor like you? Surely they pay for the work? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pinaki ghosh (talk • contribs)

Thanks for replying. Yes, I have taken a look at the Bangla version and I'd love to help but first I need to get some articles written that I think are absolutely essential in the English version... I am currently working on Midnapore, Byomkesh Bakshi, Tenida. I am also starting some pages on Bangla bands soon. So, I'll can start working in Bangla in probably a week or so. :) Antorjal 04:56, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
