Without Face
Without Face is a Hungarian progressive metal band formed in Veszprém, Hungary in 1997. The band features a dual female and male vocal line-up similar to that of gothic metal, with progressive metal and thrash metal overtones. Their lyrics are influenced by the writings of H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
In 1998, Without Face recorded its first self-titled demo Without Face. Constant touring and the demo resulted in a deal for their first album Deep Inside with Hammer Music Productions, in 2000. Without Face also appeared on a number of the label's metal music compilations. Their first album was subsequently re-released in the United States with the Dark Symphonies Records label.
The band were approached by English producer Lee Barrett, from Elitist Records for a four album deal and worldwide release in 2002. A full length album, Astronomicon was released in late 2002 and received favourable reviews from the metal music press. It was awarded "Album of the Month" in the English music magazine Metal Hammer. The band are in the process of finishing recording a new album for release in 2007.
- METAL HAMMER - POLAND 2002
- 1. Tell me something about the beginning. You are not well known in Poland and polish fan want to learn something about your history.
- The band started in 1997. - , and that year we released a demo, - but if I want to be really exact I would say 1998, after the performaces on Pepsi Sziget Fest, Budapest, when we first experienced what is a real concert like. There were a lot of fans, and it was fantastic to feel how much they enjoyed what we did on the stage. I think that was that point in the life of the band when we realised that we want to do it very seriously. After, we wrote Deep Inside, and it released in 2000 in Hungary. In the last few years we had so many concerts, we played with the Gathering, Kovenant, Zeromancer, and on the last year Pepsi Sziget fest with the Anathema.
- 2. Why you decided to name your band Without Face? This is a very mysterious name. And the title: "Deep Inside". What does it mean?
- At first I tell you the true story:)Our drummer saw the film Man Without Face(or something like this) in the movie, he saw the title written on the screen, and he thought what a great band name it would be...and the name became this. The other story is that we have never wanted to be labelled as a goth or a power or any kind of styled band. We have never wanted to hear, "they are like ,,Sisters of Mercy", or "King Diamond", or "Dream Theater" or anything. We are having our influences, but we have always wanted to make an own stlye. We are "without face". We think this name shows the colorfullness of the music we make, and that we couldn't find a better name. "Deep Inside" refers to the lyrical and musical depth of Without Face.
- 3. What are lyrics about? I know that you are inspired by E.A. Poe and H.P. Lovecraft.
- We don't write about really happy things, we want to catch a deep inside fear, an anchient feeling in the lyrics. I think they are rather mysterious. They are about a world which is refused by the civilisation: this is the word of magic, and wonders, the supernatural, the insticts. It seems that people nowadays fear from speaking about anything what can't be explained with realistic facts. They seem to forget every inexplicable things, or they just say they don't belive it, and just wave their hands. And if you start to speak about anything like this, they all think that you must be insane! Most of the civilisation don't want to know about anything what can't be explained by facts, but they all have a latent fear from these things. This is why they are watching thrillers! And these is what we want them to remember!
- 4. What are your music inspirations? What bands do you like to listen and whot music has an influence on your music. This in not a pure Gothic. How could you name that kind of music? There are many kind of music inspires our music from the classical music to jazz…all the members of the band has other kind of favorites, and I think this has a very good influence to the music to make it more colorful and interesting. The "joke" is that we don't really listen to gothic music, but when we compose the songs, somehow we manange to write something like that.) We use to name this music as goth-progressive metal. We think it shows well the style Without Face represents.
- 5. Why you decided for two vocals? Male and female.
- It emphasizes a duality that you can also find in the music, when you listen there are crunchy parts and the more melodic ones. I know there are many bands using dual vocals, but what we do it not the usual way, it's hard to tell what is different, but who listen Deep Inside, they will notice it immediately.
- 6. Who create Without Face? Who is in the band?
- We are 6 in the band actually, but in 99 when we did the recordings of Deep Inside there was another line-up. After the recording half of the band were changed, so the present line up is: Andras - vocals, Juliette - vocals, Peter - drums, Akos - bass, Roomy - guitars, Sasza - synth.
- 7. How did you sign a contract with Dark Symphonies? And how is the cooperation between you and Dark Symphonies?
- We were looking for a label...we were sending packages like crazy to many countries, many labels. But we got the same answers everywhere: "your music is really great, but we don't deal with music like this.sorry!good luck!" . But we are a band who never give up, so we were just sending and sending the cds, and then we got a very kind answer from Erika from DS, and she told us they really loved our album, so they would be very happy to sign us. So we were! Since that we didn't have any problems with each other, although we are not at Dark Symphonies now. They were always very fair with us, although we were their only not American band. We can thank them a lot.
- 8. The front cover is very dark and mysterious. Why? Who made it?
- The cover is the work of Shawn M. Ortis who is the designer artist of Dark Symphonies. We also liked it very much. It seems that while listening our music he had this kind of dark and mysterious thoughts.)
- 9. With who did you play concerts and where?
- I only know that you played with Anathema. I think that was many more concerts. Tell me something about that. Yes as we mentioned ,for the band, gigs are very important. To be honest live performance is that we play music for. We hate studio work! Of couse that is importnt also, but there are no better feelings standing before thousands of people who are waiting for the voices of your music. So, in Hungary, Budapest we played with the Gathering and the Kovenant, Zeromancer also. But we played in Austria too, we have fantastic experiences.
- 10. Is there a possibility to see you in Poland?
- Yes of course we would love to play there! We hope that when we go on tour we can get to Poland also!
- 11. I also know that you have signed a contract to Elitist/Erache. Why?
- The main reason was touring. You know, Dark Symphonies are a little label and they couldn't pay for or organize a concert tour in Europe or overseas, but Earache has all these possibilies. The other reasons are that with Earache we have much more possibilities, and it was important for us that we can work togather with someone like Lee Barrett at Elitist.
- 12. When a new album will be recoreded and when will we hear it?
- We are now recording the new album, we will be ready in April. Hopefully it will release early Summer. The title is "Astronomicon".
- 13. Tell me something about the Hungarian gothic and metal scene?
- I think there are many good bands here. I wish that Hungarian metal bands could get bigger promotion, beacuse there are so many great bands here waiting for labels! Fortunately there are more and more bands who start to realise to try the abroad, and many of them succeed! For example there are Sear Bliss, they are now also at an American label, or Evensong, they were at Displeased, but there are much more waiting for possibilities. About labels, there are only a few dealing with underground, and they also don't really care about abroad...they don't do promotion really, so this defines the possibilities, beacuse most of the bands don't have money to promote their CDs theirselves. But there are many great fanzines we are very grateful for their selfless help. 14. I'd like you to tell few words from you to your fans in Poland.
- Greetings to all metal fans in Poland, we hope to meet you soon on a great Polish fest!! Until that please look at our site at www.withoutface.com and if anyone would write us, our address is withoutface@hu.inter.net
