Gascoyne

In List of postcodes in Western Australia, there's an entry for Gascoyne River, separate from the Gascoyne Junction entry. I checked with Australia Post's postcode search and it does indeed show a locality called Gascoyne River.

I changed the entries but am now uncertain if I've done the right thing. Could you review plse. -- I@n 01:40, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kangaroo paw

Hi, I noticed that Kangaroo paw confusingly discusses three species. The genus page Anigozanthos (which isn't bad) lists them all, but I would have though that all members of the genus would be commonly known as kangaroo paws due to the distinctive floral morphology. I'm not sure what to do here to clear up the confuction. Any ideas?--Peta 01:50, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

      • I fixed the map for B.brownii, on my last walk in Kings parks the kangaroo paws are going to give a good show in about a month so I'll grab some new pictures and update the one I took last year with something better. Are there any particular features that you would like to have captured. Gnangarra 05:53, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, it's awesome. I will probably have the bones of the new flora article finished tonight so expect to see it later.--Peta 05:38, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Callitris glaucophylla

Hi Snottygobble - thanks for the note; bit of a tricky one, as other authorities (e.g. Blake 1959, Proc. Roy. Soc. Qld. 70: 33-46; Farjon 2005, Monograph of Cupressaceae and Sciadopitys; followed online by e.g. IUCN) treat it as a synonym of C. columellaris, so it is a very disputed taxon. The reasons Blake and Farjon give for lumping seem fairly convincing; conversely, the grounds for splitting given by Thompson & Johnson (Telopea 2 (6): 731-736) seem decidedly trivial ("An inland species; foliage usually glaucous" for C. glaucophylla, vs. "A coastal species; foliage usually green" for C. columellaris); Farjon points out that mixed green and glaucous seedlings can derive from a single parent tree (and your photo shows a very green tree, too!). My inclination would be to accept the merge and move the wiki page to C. columellaris, but include some discussion of the case from both sides; I'll wait to see what you think before doing anything - MPF 09:49, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks; will do. When they are treated as separate species, C. columellaris is a restricted-range east coast species (northeast NSW, southeast Qld) - MPF 14:56, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done; let me know what you think if it needs anything extra (I've half-made a distribution map to add later) - MPF 08:51, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In accordance to the sacred teaching known as Wikipedia is not for things made up in school one day, your disbelief in our religion should not have a dealing in the use of our entry. According this doctrine, "this is not an actual policy or guideline." This is not original material as this Church was founded by Our Lord Robert Smith. When he pays the money to get the website in place, we will have a large gathering of information to cite in the Wikipedia entry. However, if the Wikipedia is not available for use, we may just have to boycott citing religious bigotry.

Morgana's issue is that the bias is covert in her eyes, and show makes it seem more obvious than it is. What about: "The site deliberately ignores the elections of the Communist State Cuba owing to the beliefs of the owner. It does not claim to be politically neutral." Does that work for you?

--Wslack (talk) 01:57, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You make complete sense, I just want Margana to stay off the talk page, so I don't want to post anything there yet. I'll work with Margana to get something for everyone. Real quick answers: 1. Its not explicit with reasoning for the non-inclusion in its denial, so Margana takes that literally as a lie. 2. Ah, forgot about that, you are completely correct, ignores is a highly loaded POV word now that I consider it. I'll also call the elections "disputed", which I think is a fair word. 3. I'll use "discounts". Thanks. I won't bother you here again. Once I've got something that I think will work I'll put it on the talk page. --Wslack (talk) 02:46, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are about three or more rocks in wa that we can do something as well I think! Also, I think we need to get a template/standardisation for country regional centres, as albany, geraldton and bunbury, kalgoorlie and experance need standardisation in cf with our mate in 'bus' and vice versa.SatuSuro 12:05, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You might want to post your answer to him on his own talk page. It's much less likely to get noticed as is. Circeus 01:43, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Standardisation

I suppose the way to do it would be to give a thorough list of recommended topics in a recommended order,

I think there should be a template/guide with some items as essential/ other optional (maybe we should trawling other states to see what they do)
then let editors pick and choose what is relevant to their article. Something like:(where not essential but optional no comment)
Location (essential)
Region (essential)
  • History (essential)
  • Natural history
    • Geology
    • Climate (essential)
    • Flora
    • Fauna
  • Government
  • Demographics
    • Population
  • Social conditions
    • Education
    • Culture
      • Arts
      • Science
      • Recreation
        • Sport
    • Health
    • Welfare
    • Law and order
    • Industrial conditions
      • Wages
      • Employment
      • Prices
  • Finance
  • Land administration
    • Land settlement
    • Water supply
    • Sewerage
  • Industry
(essential to identify main for location or region)
    • Infrastructure
      • Transport
      • Communications
    • Primary production
    • Mining
    • Manufacturing
    • Trade
    • Tourism
      • Places of interest
      • Events
Problem is (a) what other states do (no need to reinvent wheel)
(b) where to discuss this with others if there is insuff in other states

sigh, it feels like place names all over again :) SatuSuro 12:42, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rocks

Other rocks? The Pinnacles spring to mind, and perhaps some of the Pleistocene cliffs along the river. Maybe a few historic quarries. What else? theyre all pebbles!

Kokerbin Rock (30 km south Kellerberrin)reputed to be Oz's third largest monolith and Mount Augustus the real stuff! SatuSuro 02:06, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bald Rock too...Cas Liber 02:07, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thinking about it over the last couple of days, I think that we should be more scientific first: - something like 'Monoliths' - qualifier with rock sorts - 'granite'

or otherwise, then 'Rock Outcrops ' - 'granite' then 'other' , 'Rock Formations' - unfortunately my geological training was a long time ago, and I havent kept up with it. :) SatuSuro 04:19, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IMHO a very good start is the Mount Augustus National Park entry, then http://www.brucerock.wa.gov.au/tourism_and_events/kokerbin_rock.html SatuSuro 04:24, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

James Waterson Johnston in Ex-convict school teachers in Western Australia.

Your Message to Karipatta Why do you keep changing the entry for James Waterson Johnston in Ex-convict school teachers in Western Australia. I checked into this after your first (anonymous) edit, and the references clearly support my version. Please provide a reference for your change or leave the article alone. Snottygobble 02:37, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My Response: I am related to James Waterson Johnston Ex-convict school teachers in Western Australia He is Convict Number 5793. I have researched the records extensively over a period of 16 years.

I have edited the entry because the details given are incorrect and confuse the Ex-convict teacher James Johnston with another convict of the same name.I have a copy of the trial of James Waterson Johnston's trial - Ref: Scottish record Office Reference: JC4/64 He was sentenced to 10 years transportation, for robbery (NOT rape), in 1858.

You claim he was sentenced to eight years' penal servitude for rape in 1865. The Superintendent Order Books (AN 358, Acc 1156, SO7), held in the Battye Library Archives, clearly state on page 451 that James Johnston, Convict 5793, lithographer (lithographic printer), was received in the colony on February 15th 1861. Page 472 clearly states convict Number 5793, James Johnston lithographer, was transferred to Champion Bay (Geraldton/Dongara area) per schooner Favourite, on March 28, 1861. Note: This is four years before James Johnston, rapist, was sentenced and transported to the colony in the Norwood.

The other details I have changed are also correct (ie date of arrival, convict ship, years of teaching at Dongara, etc): References include: Battye Library: R Series 4 Accession 1156 Battye Library: Acc 128/38 Battye Library: Acc1914 p.25 Battye Library: R Series 21B Acc 1156 Rikkers, J: Western Australian Schools 1830-1980 / John Rikkers, (1984)- Western Australian Schools 1830-1980 / John Rikkers, (1984) Erickson, Rica and O'Mara, Gillian. The Bicentennial dictionary of Western Australians. V. 9. Convicts in Western Australia, 1850-1887. Nedlands, W.A. : University of Western Australia, 1987-[1997]. ISBN 1875560440. [Revision of Dictionary of Western Australians Vol. 2 Bond 1850-1868. Alphabetical listing of convicts and short biography of each]

I am also confident that Rica Erikson, in her book The Brand on His Coat, does not identify the ex-convict teacher as the James Johnston who arrived on the Norwood. I will confirm this when I have a chance to view the book again.

Sorry I edited anonymously - it was unintentional as this is the first time I have attempted to edit Wikipedia.

Our mate 'f---oid....' was a bit concerned about this one:

Mount Isa City Council has jurisdiction over the largest city in the World, Mount Isa, which is a mining city and major service centre for North West Queensland.

Located 1829 kilometres from Brisbane, 883 kilometres from Townsville and 356 metres above sea level, Mount Isa, the "Oasis of the Outback", is a thriving community of approximately 23,000 residents.

Mount Isa City Council welcomes you to explore the history of the city, its outstanding tourist facilities such as the Riversleigh Fossil Centre and the business investment opportunities Mount Isa and its surrounding district provides.

Complete and utter -------- similar to kalgoorlie, and this stuff above is on the linked council website -- a good giggle, and its also been put in the list of cities by surface area. SatuSuro 13:37, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking

Your recent blocking of the user Bpazolli, a good friend of mine, was most insincere. The period of punishment was also severe for such minor infringements. Given that he is a gentlemen and protector of The Crown, this is quite an insult. He is also one of the few people dedicated to reforming wikipaedia and removing the vile filth that it currently contains. Please be more careful when blocking in the future.

P.S. Please do not block me as a sockpuppet of BPazolli. It has happened to me before, even when my user was created before the person's in question. I find it frustrating, annoying and rude. Thankyou.

Hello Snottygobble. I can't really see what I could do there to be honest. Adam is much more thick-skinned than us and I think he'll be able to hold the fort. I have stuck it on my watchlist though. There are a few people who keep on trying to use examples of communist elections, where only communist candidates and "approved independents" are allowed, as "real elections" like at that Elections in Cuba article. I have put it on my watchlist though. Thanks Blnguyen | rant-line 03:06, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Monday 28th August

At 7.30 am on news radio this morning! What a way to be driving Great Eastern Highway, and this comes on! ---extracted from News Radio website--- Presented by Kel Richards Can you imagine "snotty gobble" as "a well recognised delicacy"? Well, that's how they're described by the distinguished Australian writer Flora Eldershaw (1897-1956)... Is this expression "poetry, Ogden Nash, Monty Python and Dr Seuss rolled into one"? The expression "snotty gobble" does sound pretty revolting, but it turns out to be the name for several native shrubs (or trees) of the genus Persoonia. As variations the "snotty gobble" fruit was also known (sometimes) as "snotty gollion" or "snotty goblin". Not a great improvement, really. The name is first recorded from 1854. And, in case you're wondering, "snotty gobble" is described in one quotation I came across as "red berries". And, it seems, the tree that grew the berries had another use: its red-coloured inner bark could be used to produce a dye that colonial ladies used to dye straw hats a "vivid and lasting red". Professor Roly Sussex describes the name "snotty gobble" as "poetry, Ogden Nash, Monty Python and Dr Seuss rolled into one." Well, perhaps, Roly… perhaps. ---end of extract--- SatuSuro 02:02, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
