Asin Mary Thottumkal known as Asin (born 26th October, 1985 in Kochi, India) is a popular film actress. She debuted in Malayalam but eventually made a breakthrough in the Telugu and the Tamil cinema industries.
Name Origin
The name Asin is the combination of the prefix "A" from the Sanskrit language and the word "Sin" from the English language.
It means - "Without blemish - pure".
Career
Asin debuted in the Malayalam film Narendra Makan Jayakanthan Vaka in 2001. It did not do well at the box-office. Her breakthrough came with her first Telugu film when she played the role of a Tamil girl in the successful Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi.
Initially many in the Tamil industry considered her to be a jinx as the initial movies she signed in Tamil were either cancelled, delayed or faced financial problems.[citation needed] Although she signed Ullam Ketkumae as her first Tamil film, her first release was M. Kumaran son of Mahalakshmi which was a remake of her Telugu film Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi. The movie went on to be one of the biggest hits in 2004 and introduced Asin to Kollywood.
Her movie "Gajini" with Surya which was released both in Tamil n Telegu and it was a box office hit in both the industries.
Many movies followed and Asin played opposite some popular actors in South Indian Cinema, among them Surya, Vijay, Vikram and Ajith, with whom she will star in Godfather.
Her next movies include Pokiri with Vijay and Chennaiyil Oru Mazhai Kaalam with Surya. She was roped in to play heroine in Sillunu Oru Kaadhal with Surya, but opted out because her character was to play second fiddle to Jyothika. She was subsequently replaced with Bhoomika Chawla.
Asin is also brand ambassador for various products including Parachute, Fairever, Close-Up and Fanta.
Other Interests
She is reportedly studying B.A. English Literature at St. Teresa's College, Kochi. She has shifted from her home town Kochi to Chennai, where she stays on Harrington Road. She is a native speaker of Malayalam, and claims to speak Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Sanskrit, English and French [1] . Before becoming an actress, she was a part-time model and a businesswoman.[2]

Trivia
- Aamir Khan called her personally and congratulated her on a job well done in her film, Ghajini. [3] and expressed an interest in remaking the film in Hindi with her.
- She dropped out of Surya's Sillunu Oru Kaadhal even after being offered three songs as she thought her role in the movie had not much scope. Her part went to Bhumika Chawla [4]. She also had previously dropped out of Madhavan's Thambi due to tight scheduling.
- Was supposed to act with Chiranjeevi in the Telugu movie, Stalin but was replaced with Trisha Krishnan. [5]
