This is a list of characters from the Nickelodeon animated television series, SpongeBob SquarePants.

Characters Present

  • SpongeBob SquarePants - An incredibly optimistic square sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea, he is the lead character of the show. He works at the Krusty Krab with his neighbor Squidward. He believes that no one has ulterior motives, and believes almost anything that anybody tells him. His interests are bubble blowing, jellyfishing, playing super heroes, and "doing things" with Patrick. He is very pliable and rubbery, and is capable of stretching, inflating, multiplying, or even breaking apart. He is a terrible driver and goes crazy behind the wheel of a boat (the car of Bikini Bottom). Voiced by Tom Kenny.
  • Squidward Tentacles - A misanthropic octopus (Stephen Hillenburg insists Squidward is an octopus and not a squid) that lives in an Easter Island moai between the domiciles of SpongeBob and Patrick. Although loved by the other characters, Squidward is pessimistic, antisocial, and curmudgeonly. He is an artist who paints and plays the clarinet horribly. Voiced by Rodger Bumpass.
  • Patrick Star - A cheerful, naïve and unintelligent starfish who is SpongeBob's best friend. He lives under a rock to the left of Squidward's house. Everybody but SpongeBob realizes that Patrick is incredibly stupid. Voiced by Bill Faggerbakke.
  • Eugene H. Krabs - The money-loving, miserly owner of the Krusty Krab. Commonly known as Mr. Krabs, he is SpongeBob and Squidward's boss. He lives in an anchor with his daughter Pearl, who is (somehow) a whale while he is a crab. Mr. Krabs once said that Pearl "takes after her mother that way", in a guide to the show. Voiced by Clancy Brown.
  • Sandra "Sandy" Cheeks - A karate loving daredevil martial artist and scientist squirrel who moved into an air-filled dome under the sea. Her dome is located somewhere directly down the road from SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward's houses. She is originally from Texas, and is fiercely proud of this fact. The episode "Chimps Ahoy" revealed that she works for a group of highly civilized monkeys to make scientific inventions in the TreeDome. Voiced by Carolyn Lawrence.
  • Gary the Snail - SpongeBob's pet snail. He acts like a cat, for example, meowing, sleeping, and avoiding baths. Very intelligent, as revealed in the episodes "Your Shoe's Untied" and "Sleepy Time.". Voiced by Tom Kenny.
  • Sheldon J. Plankton - The owner of the restaurant Chum Bucket and Mr. Krabs' main rival. Usually referred to by his surname, Plankton, he has one yellow eye with a red iris. Plankton is supposed to be modeled after a type of plankton called a copepod. He is determined to steal the secret Krabby Patty formula from The Krusty Krab and run Mr. Krabs out of business. His restaurant, which never made business except for the movie, is across the street of the Krusty Krab. His only companion is his computer "wife", Karen. Voiced by Mr. Lawrence.
  • French Narrator - He provides introductions to several episodes in the style of French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau. Voiced by Tom Kenny.
  • Mermaid Man - A semi-retired superhero who lives in the retirement home Shady Shoals. He is older than Barnacle Boy. He forgets many things at times and he enjoys sleeping, watching TV and playing Bingo. He is voiced by Ernest Borgnine.
  • Barnacle Boy - Semi-retired superhero, and Mermaid Man's sidekick. He also lives at Shady Shoals retirement home. In the episode "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V", he changes his name to Barnacle Man. This was not a permanent change; in "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy VI: The Motion Picture", he is Barnacle Boy again. According to the video game SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, he has a son, a daughter-in-law, and four "screaming" grandchildren. Barnacle Boy is 68 years old. His real name was revealed to be Kyle. He is voiced by Tim Conway.
  • Pearl Krabs The typical-teenage whale daughter of Mr. Krabs. Voiced by Lori Alan.
  • Larry the Lobster - A very strong bodybuilding lobster that gets all the ladies. He regularly goes to Bikini Bottom's beach, Goo Lagoon and works as a lifeguard there. Voiced by Mr. Lawrence.
  • Mrs. Poppy Puff - A Boating School driving instructor who teaches students (including SpongeBob) at Mrs. Puff's Boating School. She often gets hurt by SpongeBob's bad driving, and ends up in jail a few times. Mary Jo Catlett, better known for her role as Pearl the maid on Diff'rent Strokes, provides Mrs. Puff's voice.
  • Squilliam Fancyson - An octopus that attended Squidward's band class, and always puts Squidward down. He is a very wealthy, snooty, unibrow-endowed rival of Squidward who looks down at Squidward for being just a lowly cashier in a greasy spoon.
  • The Flying Dutchman - A green ghost named after the famous ghost ship of the same name. He lives in a giant ship that floats in the "sky" (underwater). Voiced by Brian Doyle-Murray.
  • Karen - Plankton's "computer wife". She is the brain to Sheldon J. Plankton, supplying him with plots. She irritates him most of the time. She is voiced by Tom Kenny's wife, Jill Talley.
  • Painty the Pirate - A painting of a pirate head. He sings the SpongeBob Squarepants theme song. Is also seen in "Your Shoe's Untied" and "Wet Painters".
  • Patchy the Pirate - President of the SpongeBob SquarePants Fan Club. He hosts the live-action segments of the SpongeBob SquarePants specials. Has an eyepatch and hook for a hand that alternates between his left and right hands. Tom Kenny plays Patchy.
  • Potty the Parrot - Patchy's pet parrot. A marionette. He normally annoys and talks back to Patchy and likes future stuff while Patchy likes prehistoric stuff. Voiced by Stephen Hillenburg. Potty's favorite band is "The Birdbrains."

SpongeBob's Family

  • Mr. and Mrs. SquarePants - SpongeBob's parents, made their debut in "Home Sweet Pineapple", where they came to pick up SpongeBob after nematodes destroyed his pineapple house. To date, his appearances have been only in flashbacks.

Squidward's Family

  • Mrs. Tentacles - Squidward's mother. She made a cameo appearance in "Fools in April". She says "You stink!", possibly indicating a bad childhood, in a flashback of when Squidward pulled a bad April Fool's prank on SpongeBob, which occurred a short time before he realized his mother was there. In "Sailor Mouth", she makes Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, and Patrick repaint her pink anchor home as punishment for foul language, and in "Mid-Life Crustacean", she grounds her son for the night after he steals her bloomers. In Enemy In-Law, she also falls in love with Plankton once. She is voiced by Paul Tibbitt in her first two appearances, but is voiced by Sirena Irwin in her third appearance. She laughs like Popeye.
