Northwestern Lehigh School District is a public school district in the northwestern corner of Lehigh County, in Pennsylvania. The district is composed of approximately 2,350 students, with two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. All schools offer a gifted program, and special education programs, bolth of which have been subject to recient criticisms. All the available buildings are nearly packed to full capacity, and expansions are planned roughly every five years. As of February 2006, plans are currently underway for a elementary expansion or new building.

High School

Northwestern Lehigh High School was built in 19xx. Over the year it has received numerous additions, the most recent in 2002. This has relieved overcrowding, however many complain about the ugliness of the building, sometimes referring to it as, "Like a cheap quilt you buy at the secondhand store."

Overall, the academics offered at the high school have received high praise, from students and teachers alike. Many are impressed with the option students have of taking "Advanced Placement" or "AP" courses, which, upon their completion, students may take a test administered by the college board and may be eligible to receive college credits.

However, the high school has not received its share of criticism. Many students were upset to find out at the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year, that many course syllabi would only be available over the Internet. There was also a strong outcry form students that the online syllabi were only available in proprietary file formats such as Microsoft's Microsoft Word format.

Middle School

The middle school was constructed in 1991 to relieve overcrowding in the, now, high school building. In 2005 a new addition containing science labs was constructed.

Elementary Schools

Northwestern Lehigh School District is home to two elementary schools. Northwestern Lehigh Elementary, which is located on the main campus along with the high school and middle school, and Weisenburg Elementary which is about 15 miles south.

Morning Show

Northwestern Lehigh High School is home to "The Morning Show," a school news program broadcast, via closed circuit TV, through the district. A live web stream of the show is set to soon be available.

Criticisms

Various Criticisms have been voiced by students recently, including:

  • Lack of open bathrooms. (currently only 2 boy's and 2 girl's bathrooms are open in the rather big high school)
  • Distribution of Palm Pilots(R) to special education "sped" students.
  • Athletic priority takes forefront vs. Acidemic priories
  • Constant pressuring by administration to have students choose to attend nearby Lehigh Career and Technical Institute "LTCI/vo-tech"
