Blaze the Cat is a fictitious character, a female cat who made her debut in the Nintendo DS video game, Sonic Rush. She is a princess from an alternate dimension and defender of the Sol Emeralds. Her mission in Sonic Rush was to retrieve the Emeralds from the clutches of Eggman and Eggman Nega. In the end, Blaze makes a good friend, Cream.
History
Games
Blaze's dimension and Sonic the Hedgehog's are in flux with each other, allowing the characters to travel from one to the other through a tear in the space-time continuum. Blaze is the only playable character in Sonic Rush aside from Sonic himself.
Throughout the game, she learns the meaning of friendship from Sonic and his friends, especially Cream the Rabbit. Cream opens her up to the world and teaches her the value of friendship, causing the the two become close partners like Sonic and Miles "Tails" Prower.
It is through the power of friendship that she realizes the true powers of the Sol Emeralds and transforms into her super form (in which Blaze's fur becomes a light, glossy red, her wrists/gloves turn to flames, and a flaming force-field develops around her) as a product of the Sol Emeralds rather than the lighter color and force field of Chaos energy usually used with the Chaos Emeralds) to help Super Sonic stop Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega from taking over the universe. (This is much like how in Sonic Adventure the heroes use positive emotions to charge the drained chaos emeralds to fight Chaos.) After Sonic and Blaze finish their adventure, they promise to see each other again and say their goodbyes as they shake hands, being torn from each other as a result of their respective dimensions being returned to normal. Blaze, still in super form, now understands her power and the meaning of friendship as she thinks of Sonic's words of advice.
Blaze will allegedly appear in the 15th Anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog.[1] She is said to have a connection to Silver the Hedgehog.
Archie Comics
Blaze first appears in issue #160, where she comes to Knothole seeking the "Blue One", aka Sonic.
Relationships with Other Characters
- Sonic the Hedgehog- At first, the other characters suggest she should seek Sonic's help - Blaze denies this and wonders why they are so dependent on him. However, through working with Sonic in order to save the universe from Eggman and Eggman Nega, Blaze learns the value of friendship, and before she goes back to her own dimension, she promises to meet him again. Similar to Sonic's transformation with the Chaos Emeralds, she has the ability to transform into Burning Blaze using the Sol Emeralds from her world.
- Cream the Rabbit- After Cream finds Blaze, she takes her to tea at her house. Blaze is shocked by how friendly Cream is. Blaze decides to go search for the Sol Emeralds, but Cream offers to guide her. The two form a fast friendship as Cream helps Blaze in her search for the emeralds. Cream is later kidnapped by Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega, and Blaze, admitting Cream is her friend, rescues her.
- Amy Rose- Amy is the girl madly in love with Sonic the Hedgehog. After meeting Blaze she questions who she is. After Amy discovers Sonic is looking for her, she come to the conclusion that the two are in love. In reality, Blaze and Sonic do not have those feelings for each other.
- Miles "Tails" Prower- Tails is Sonic's best friend and helped Sonic find Blaze.
- Knuckles the Echidna- After Blaze and Cream run into Knuckles, Blaze and Knuckles get into a fight and form a small rivalry.
- Eggman Nega and Eggman- Nega is the other world counterpart of Eggman. Eggman and Eggman Nega team up to rule the world, and Blaze tries to stop them.
- Silver the Hedgehog- It is rumoured that Blaze has a connection to Silver.
Personality
Although Blaze is somewhat shy and withdrawn when meeting strangers, she doesn't let this prevent her from fulfilling her mission. Her lifestyle being incredibly similar to Knuckles', this means Blaze is as anti-social and as shy as he is and often finds it hard to open up and talk to people. She hates having the spotlight on her, preferring to take a backseat. She also hates anyone who even looks at her emeralds in the wrong way. Throughout the course of the game she develops a more friendly and gentle personality. Blaze is very serious and nothing is going to stop her from collecting the Sol Emeralds.
Abilities
- Blaze can run moderately fast, but it is likely she isn't as fast as Sonic or Shadow.
- Blaze is a pyrokinetic.
- While in her super form, she can generate fireballs, which she can throw.
- Blaze turns into a tornado when jumping, similar to Espio in Knuckles Chaotix, and doesn't keep speed or go faster.
Trivia
- In the English version of Sonic Rush, Blaze is voiced by Bella Hudson. Bella Hudson was mistakenly referred to as Berra Hudson when credited as Blaze in Sonic Rush, most likely due to language barriers.
- People often mistakenly refer to Blaze as a queen; this is a false statement because she is still a princess. This could have occurred because she's also referred to as "Queen Blaze the Cat" on the official Sega of America Sonic mini site, Sonic Central. This could have possibly been the reason for the occurrence.
- Because of the way Sonic and Blaze talked and interacted at the end of the game, some fans think she may have developed feelings for Sonic. However, Blaze and Sonic can only only have a friendship.
- Blaze is the first female character in all portrayals of Sonic the Hedgehog to have had a super form.
- Blaze is 95 centimeters tall (3'1"), identical to Tikal.[2]
- While Sonic usually runs with fast-paced, quick steps, Blaze seems to run with long strides. It should be noted that Sonic in-game does run faster. She also turns herself into a tornado when dashing, as opposed to Sonic's Spin Dash. This is surprisingly similar to Espio's version of the Spin Dash.
- She appears in the Archie Comics adaptation of Sonic Rush in issues 160-161.
- Her Super form after using the Sol Emeralds, though normally simply referred to as Super Blaze, is known in the Japanese manual for Sonic Rush to be "Burning Blaze".
- Blaze's color and hairstyle are similar to the Pink Flicky in Sonic 3D Blast. In Volcano Valley, the Pink Flicky is on fire, similar to Blaze's Super form. This is very similar to the color and hair style of the Blue Flicky from most Sonic games resembling Sonic, and also being able to have a yellow Super Form in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Blaze and the Flicky are both from an alternate dimension, as well. Added to that, the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 3D Blast resemble the Sol Emeralds very strongly.
