You have nothing more to say? -- ran (talk) 02:04, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am leaving the above on here, and am clipping the first paragraph of Wikipedia:Civility-"Civility is a rule for the conduct of edits, comments, and talk page discussions on all Wikipedias. Whereas incivility is roughly defined as personally targeted behavior that causes an atmosphere of greater conflict and stress, our rule of civility states plainly that people must act with civility toward one another." Chris 02:16, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chris, I am really sorry to just get your message that you are leaving the Scouting Project. I know WP can be frustrating, but I wish you would reconsider perhaps after having a week or so away from WP. You have and are doing a great job for the Scouting Project. Yesterday I was out at University preparing material for the Workshop I mentioned and then off to a social event in the evening, so with the time difference, I have only just found all the arguments that went on yesterday. It is early morning here. If you want to talk off-WP, my e-mail is on my User page. Best wishes, --Bduke 22:03, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Brian, I really appreciate it. I'm just tired of the vandals and the narrowmindedness and the rudeness this thing engenders. I had asked the project for some moral support in the issue where the guy above started attributing motives to my edits. I wasn't asking for them to back the stance I was taking on the issue, I wasn't chasing barnstars or soliciting votes for featured articles, plain-and-simple I was asking someone to come to my defense in the name of civility. They're not that caliber of people, I found to my sadness. What instead instead was written was a milquetoast reply on the Scouting talk page making it look like I had instigated the escalation. It didn't help the situation, and it put me in a bad light. I have enough things to worry about without having to worry about watching my back with others I've supported. Thanks, though, brother. Chris 23:28, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I'm sorry to see that you've run into some issues here on Wikipedia. It, unfortunately, happens from time to time, and I really don't know what to say about it. You're an excellent contributor to Scouting-related articles.

I had a question regarding the image at Image:--ScoutsChris3.jpg. I posted a message with more detail at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Scouting#Image Issues. I wouldn't know if you're using the correct tag or not. However, the fact that the image is labeled as fair use makes it so that we can't use it in templates, user pages, portals, and the like. It's basically a messy legal issue.

Do you have any more information about the image so that we could possibly label it as free? Thanks. — Rebelguys2 talk 17:50, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, here's the information, if there are other questions I will answer them so you can get this used as you need.
1) This is a backpatch from my personal collection. It is from the Boy Scouts of Canada (now renamed Scouts Canada), and has not been their logo since at least 1967 (39 years by my count, which was why I used it thus).
2) I scanned and modified this myself in December 2004.
3) The reason it was used above others was that it is nondescript as to nationality, there is no national device or ornamentation except for the English-language "Be Prepared" scroll at the bottom.
4) My belief is that if you were to further modify this by removing the rocker, then it would be a logo that was never used in any form by any previous organization, and thus might count as free under Wikipedia guidelines.
5) Another way, and maybe the preferable one, to modify it so that it would be 'free', would be to include the Girl Guides trefoil behind the fleur-de-lis. This would assure WP that this is a new creation, and it would have the benefit of being coed. For instance, you could use the trefoil outline from Image:-p-ISGFbadge.gif in the modification.
6) The third way to get 'free', as I can see, would be to modify the colors, like turn the stars red or something. However, do bear in mind that green-and-gold are the traditional Scouting colors picked by B-P.
I'm still around, feel free to ask stuff, I just won't be a member of the Scouting project any more.
Thanks, Chris 18:37, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The image you provided actually looks really nice. I wouldn't have been able to churn out anything better in Photoshop, myself. Thanks! I've left a message at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Scouting to get some further input. — Rebelguys2 talk 07:07, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Condolences

Chris: My deepest condolences about your wife. It's so sad, especially since I take it she died at age 28. While my wife is fine, my dad died when I was 12, so I can empathize deeply. Kindest regards and YIS, Randy Rlevse 19:02, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Randy, right now I am trying to find a way to Japan on no money, being stonewalled by authorities there and wanting very badly to join her. Chris 19:15, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What Randy said. I just lost my grandmother in September due to Alzheimers, and am expecting my grandfather to pass from the same disease soon. They had a tremendous hand in raising me during the first 10 years or so of my life, and it has been very hard. *hugs* to you and your family. --Naha|(talk) 19:16, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have no family that cares, thank you though. I do appreciate it. Chris 19:35, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chris, I never knew your wife, but you painted a very loving portrait of her so what she meant to you is clear to anyone. There is not much that I can say, so take care - my prayers are with you. John Smith's 22:18, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, sir. I so much appreciate your thoughts on my Wife Sheri. That means so much to me, personally and deeply. She is still with me, in ways no one believes. How did you find me, may I ask? Chris 22:29, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed some of your edits on articles that I was interested in, so when I decided to check your page I saw the note. It's no problem - I wish all wikipedians were as thoughtful towards each other. John Smith's 17:08, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please let me add my condolences as well. I have seen some of your edits and followed one from char siu to your user page, since I thought "Kintetsubuffalo" was an interesting user name. All I can say is that I am very sorry for your loss and I hope you are able to make it to Japan as soon as possible. MCB 01:44, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, sir, everyone is starting to prove to me that Wikipedia is really the community it hoped to be all along. Thank you so much. Chris 20:29, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chris, I'm very sorry to hear about your wife and your loss. I also deeply appreciate your contributions to WP and I hope you are able to make it to Japan quickly. Tstockma 11:15, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Tom. Her family doesn't want me around, so I am trying to get through this without any sort of support.
I think I know you, as you are from the Springs. Do you know Steve Miranda? Chris 17:56, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Chris, I don't know Steve Miranda, I've only lived here for a couple years and I don't get around much anymore. I'm sorry there are issues between you and your wife's family, and you don't have support. We could meet for a cuppa joe sometime downtown. Tstockma 10:57, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chris, I would like to add my condolences for your loss. You and your wife are in my prayers. --Tachikoma 21:39, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much, that is so kind of you. Chris 23:25, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to hear about your wife...

Obviously nothing a complete stranger can say to make things better, but my sympathies for your loss. I live sort-of close to Tokyo, I know how hard it can be sometimes living in Japan, but I can't imagine how hard it would be to go through the sort of tragedy you have here. MikeDockery 00:09, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Mike, you're a true gentleman and I appreciate your thoughts. Chris 00:11, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I feel I should also apologize for the blithe remark about trees on the kami page. I will look into your question. MikeDockery 00:17, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all, Sheri liked your little joke, she is fond of making jokes at odd moments. (I speak of her as here, as, well, hence my question on theophany...) Chris 00:23, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I noticed you're trying to come to Japan. Like I said, I live near Tokyo, so if I can help you with anything let me know. One thing you should look into is many airlines offer discounted tickets for people who have to travel due to the loss of a loved one. You should also contact the nearest Japanese consulate where you live, as well as the (American?) embassy when you get here. They will be able to help you. The bureaucracy in Japan is astounding in its inefficiency, and I'm sure they'll come off as coldhearted as well, but don't take it personally. That's just the culture here. MikeDockery 01:00, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Damn, life sucks sometimes. God alone knows how I would live without the mother of my children :-( Prayers offered up for solace, Just zis Guy you know? 00:41, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much. How did you find me, sir? Chris 00:43, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You indicated above that you were having trouble getting the money for a flight to Japan. I found a fare of $524 roundtrip here. That's about as low as they ever seem to get. And you should be able to go to Japan on a tourist visa for up to 90 days without any difficulties. Hope everything works out. --日本穣 00:27, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate that, right now it's not so much the money as that her family in Japan is grieving and is not yet ready to see me. But I so appreciate your help on my behalf, blessings to you. Chris 20:26, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

documentation of theophany by kami

Left you an example of it on the Kami talk page. If you need the actual reference, I can go digging for that as well. Also, if I may, my condolences on your loss. I know nothing that I can say can salve the pain, but I wish you all the best in this trying time for you.--み使い Mitsukai 03:20, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for your help and diligence on my behalf, and for your kind thoughts. She appreciates it, as do I. Arigato, Chris 19:08, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note

I know you may not know me, as we have not interacted much, but I've had a lot of respect for you, especially after seeing your work on Junák and other scouting pages. I hope to offer my condolences, and a reminder that the Wikipedia community is always here and willing to support you however you may need it. -Tim Rhymeless (Er...let's shimmy) 22:05, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That is so nice to hear, thank you so much. Chris 03:05, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chris: I'm not sure what you are concerned with on Gadget850's change: the fact he says it's a copyvio (and you do not feel so?) or the fact it was removed??? Does it need to be translated into English??? If it's a copyvio, will mere proper footnoting suffice to keep it in? Please fill me in more. Randy, Rlevse 16:26, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that much of it shouldn't be in Spanish, this is the English wiki afterall and if it's a big copy and paste, it should at least be footnoted. I'll look at this again tomorrow. Running out of time tonight. Thanks for mentioning it. Rlevse 01:57, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Look closer. It reads like an advertisement and I agree with Ed's change. Let me know if you have more suggetions. Rlevse 13:11, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Working in Japan.

Hey, you asked about working in Japan. By far the best way to work in Japan is through the JET Programme, which places native English teachers in Japanese schools. It's quite competitive, but well worth it. It's a great experience if you're chosen. You can do a web search to find out more information. Good luck! MikeDockery 10:00, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shinto

Ah, shinto does not have well developed doctrine (of afterlife) though it's fairly ritualistic. That is why it is bit futile to try to approach shinto from theology. The best way to tackle shinto is to study it's ritual and try to accertain the meaning. It is often the case that such ritual or interpretation does not have textual basis. I do not know any book in English which deal with this aspect. FWBOarticle

Thank you. The reason I asked was about the absolution of sin after death. Thanks, Chris 17:36, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cyrillic map

Well, I have put Mongolia in dark green because although it seems there's some interest in revive the old vertical mongol ideograms, in practice the alphabet used in the day-bay-day life (including official Mongolian government sites) is still the Cyrillic one.

Hello to you too :) I just read about your wife; I'm sorry. I'm glad you chose not to mourn her. I find you should celebrate a person's life rather than mourn their death. Ladysway1985 22:10, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Japan article template

I didn't make it clear enough when I created it that it should only be used for project-specific pages related to WikiProject Japan. It shouldn't be used in the main namespace. I put a clarification on the project page, so hope that helps. (^_^) --日本穣 Nihonjoe 23:34, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An article is project-specific if it's got "Wikipedia:WikiProject Japan" in front of it, or if it's a related "Wikipedia:" page such as WP:MOS-JA). It should not be used on any template pages, though. --日本穣 Nihonjoe 23:42, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted your edit at Singapore

Well, Scouting is one of the most prominent youth groups in Singapore, but as it is not a "subarticle" of Singapore, and education is, I reverted your addition. However, the contextual introduction of certain scouting activities will be welcome at Education in Singapore. This is just because of Wikipedia:Summary, so don't take offense. Cheers! Scouting in New Zealand

The main New Zealand article only links to the highest level articles about New Zealand. Scouting could be linked to from Culture of New Zealand or maybe Sport in New Zealand, and it's already part of the category Category:New Zealand society.-gadfium 03:43, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've nominated the article Scouting in Vatican City for deletion, under the Articles for deletion process. We appreciate your contributions, but I personally don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the nomination (also see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Your opinions on why the topic of the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome: participate in the discussion by editing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Scouting in Vatican City. Add four tildes like this ˜˜˜˜ to sign your comments. You can also edit the article Scouting in Vatican City during the discussion, but do not remove the "Articles for Deletion" template (the box at the top of the article), this will not end the deletion debate.

If there is any evidence that Scouting does exist in Vatican City please let me know (either on my talk page or at the AfD discussion). My suspicion is that this page was just a placeholder. savidan(talk) (e@) 06:25, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chris, Thanks for letting me know. Rlevse 18:47, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry if I erred, but seriously, are you telling me there are boy scouts in Vatican City. There arent really any permanent residents under the age of 18 there. savidan(talk) (e@) 20:28, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
All I am saying is that the World Organization of the Scout Movement is pretty specific about which countries don't have Scouting. I can't say about the Vatican, I would agree with you. But I have evidence of Scouting in the other countries you propose to delete, in the form of their national badges, which I plan to scan up when I get the computer working. I know those all have the same info, I planted them as seeds to encourage others to add to. Chris 23:40, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Would you also be willing to accept Xorox's proposal instead. It seems like even if we get evidence of Scouting existing in these countries we won't have any information to differentiate them for years if ever. savidan(talk) (e@) 04:26, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If they were merged, the current templates could be maintained because the articles would be redirected to "Scouting in countries with no national organizaton". I appreciate your intent of having people from those countries write the articles; however, in order for those articles (if they are ever written) not to violate the original research policy the sources would have to be published. Thus, if it is impossible for a non-member of scouting to write those articles, it begs the question. I did google and full lexis searches for all of these and was unable to find any information. I would of course support creating a subarticle once there is information to write, but I think it is silly to hold placemaker articles. In truth, it is unlikley that there will ever be much notable and verifiable information on scouting sans national organizations, and what little information there is (from scouting.org) and is likely to be published in the next decade will most likely be generic literature rather than specific to the individual countries. savidan(talk) (e@) 18:55, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Chris-it may be wise to save the text of the articles in the Vatican CIty afd outside of wiki for future use. Randy, Rlevse 00:10, 19 April 2006 (UTC)YIS[reply]

Hello Chris, over the last days you added content to a lot of Scouting articles, that was first published on http://n2zgu.50megs.com/ and its subpages. I'm not really happy about this for some reasons:

  • the possible copyright infringments on a large number WikiProject Scouting's articles,
  • the web page is outdated (last changes in 2001),
  • and the content is not very reliable. (I think you have seen my changes to the Luxembourgish articles.)

Could you please try to obtain a permisson to use these texts under the GFDL? Otherwise I fear we must remove the texts from the articles (and put in some new reformulated and doublechecked content).

Please read also Wikipedia:Copyrights and Wikipedia:Copyright problems for backgrounds.

YiS --jergen 08:33, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS: I want content on the associations history in the articles, but we have to follow Wikipedia's official policies. I'm very thankful for your contributions to international Scouting - otherwise I'd feel a little lonely in that part of our project. --jergen 08:33, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jergen, I sure will speak to the fellow, he is a long-time friend of mine, I will try to obtain GDFL from him. Two things, I provided him much of his original information that he worked from back in 1994, and many things on his site are direct copies from the 1990 English language version of Scouting 'Round the World, so in my mind I was getting a return on the information I had given him. I certainly meant no copyright infringement or plagiarism, and I will speak to him as soon as possible. Thanks, your brother in Scouting, Chris 17:54, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
follow-up-I e-mailed Gregg at both addresses I have for him, and CC:d Randy Rlevse as I did not have your e-mail. I want this to be honest and never intended otherwise. Chris 19:09, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris, thanks for the new pictures. Some of them seem distorted to me, eg Image:Sudan.jpg and Image:Spainagde.jpg. Could you try to get better versions of these? I am working on it as we speak, more soon. Part of the problem is that I do not have a scanner or working computer at home, so must rely on friends. If you can point me to better selections on these, I can capture and modify them for the articles. YiS, Chris 11:12, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Scouting Userboxes

I'm trying to get new images for the Girl Scout userboxes, but most of them are TM and I can't use them. I was told you were the person to come to for generic images, I was wondering if you could help me out? You don't have to do it right away or even get back to me right away, if you even chose to do it, since I see you are on wikibreak and looks like your pretty stressed, I hope things are going well for you. I really like the green background with the yellow, that's the one I am using right now on the template. I have a question, I took a picture of my own Silver Award, is that still trademarked by the scouts, or is it PD because I took a picture of my own Award? Griz 22:29, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Scout logos

Hi Chris, I found this source today: http://www.dpsg-heisingen.de/html/mitglieder_wosm_1.php

After updating a large part of the existant images I run out of power. Do you take over? --jergen 19:52, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris, I uploaded most of the images you requested. Actually missing are France's sub-associations, Norway KFUM (outdated) and ZSKSS (I have to search for this). I'll also upload the images for Svenska Scoutrådet's member, but not today... --jergen 18:06, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jergen, each of those images (France, Norway and ZSKSS) are on that http://www.dpsg-heisingen.de/html/mitglieder_wosm_1.php website. Even outdated, and image is better than a blank file. Also, is it okay what I did with the Girl Guiding info yesterday? Chris 19:42, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I know, they are... but I got tired. Saturday we had a Scouting presentation on a state fair including a large tent we had to take down during a tempest. In the evening a meeting of our regional Scouting history committee. Yesterday was the annual meeting of our Scout foundation (bilances including some 100.000 Euros etc.). Hope you understand.
But I don't find ZSKSS on the list - there is only ZTS listed. --jergen 08:05, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All requests are done, next are the missing WAGGGS-emblems (as far as they are avalaible). BTW, I like the additional information on Guiding; but I think we should start articles of their own as soon as possible - I've lots of informations on them. --jergen 11:38, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nakayama Miki

Thanks for your article on Nakayama Miki; enjoyed reading and learning about this person. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ekoontz (talkcontribs) .

May I ask how you figure that the link to holdergals.net on the Cigarette holder article is a good link? It appears to be a fairly newly launched site with hardly any content at all... --AbsolutDan (talk) 03:00, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi fellow Wikiholic Dan! The reason I put it back is, aside from the fact that it was poorly added the first time, it is an attempt at community for those interested. If there is a better link to a related forum, please change it to that. :) I'm just trying to encourage connection for those of similar interest, and the link itself was not as bad as how it was put on there. Chris 16:44, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, fair enough, I suppose there's no harm leaving it there until something more extensive comes around. Cheers --AbsolutDan (talk) 17:15, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question and Opinion

Take a look at the “Scouting in Connecticut” page and let me know what you think.

  • Maybe I should merge the current council into the one subject heading of “Past and Present Councils”
  • Do we need to identify each town in a district?
  • I also found 42 – 43 Boy Scout Camps, past and present, any suggestion how to add them?

Let me know what you think and who else can I ask to look at the article.--dep369 22:08, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Dep369[reply]

Thanks for your comments

  • 1 Like the rest of the Internet, Wikipedia abhors large strings of capital letters. Perhaps the way to get around this is to italicize what you now have in caps, or perhaps change the font color.Sounds like a good idea. I'll work on different colors.
  • 2 Wikipedia also dislikes "List of..." anything. You can take that out anywhere it appears in the article, and it will sound much better. We changed all these from "List of councils in x state" to "Scouting in x state" specifically so that Wikipedia would not delete them, as it had done to the lists of OA lodges. That was a pity, as the fellow had put a lot of work into it, but lists are bad, m'kay? Will change them.
  • 2a Wikipedia dislikes the use of postal abbreviations. If you don't want to spell out "Connecticut" for sheer volume, consider leaving out the state name in each instance, like Hartford instead of Hartford, Connecticut. I didn't even notice that I did not spell out Connecticut in the first section, where I did in all the other sections (and 169 times in the Girl Scout Section. I will fix this.
  • 3 I don't understand the addition of Honor societies where it is, can you explain? Someone added this when I had the Arcoon Lodge information as a separate article, so I just imported it over. The Info on Chi Sigma, which started out as a honor society could have influenced the person who tagged it..

But my original question was:

  • Maybe I should merge the current council into the one subject heading of “Past and Present Councils”
  • Do we need to identify each town in a district?
  • I also found 42 – 43 Boy Scout Camps, past and present, any suggestion how to add them?

any suggestions?

I can work on other Girl Scout Council list, at least current councils. But the same question bothers me, should we name every town? Let me know.--dep369 01:24, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Dep369[reply]

Eagle Scout Peer Review

I listed the Eagle Scout article for a formal peer review a few moments ago in the hope in about 2 weeks to list it as a FAC. Based on my experience with other FACs and one of my own successful FAs, I think there are two things people may object to: a) is the lead long enough? and b) are there too many lists? Please think these issues over. Thanks for all the help, Randy. YIS, Rlevse 11:46, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Japan W. Edwards Deming

Hi Chris,

Last week you placed the WikiProject Japan notice on W. Edwards Deming talk. I signed up for WikiProject Japan but am not sure how to go about finding an editor to help with the article. I am very knowledgeable about the subject matter but not about Wikipedia (newbie). I could use help with mark up, format, NPOV, and OR issues. I think the article is not that far from the good article criteria and would welcome assistance from an editor with more experience. Thank you. Leaders100 21:31, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the information, I will get in touch with Nihonjoe.

Hi Chris, The reason it's looks grainy is becuase there is a bug in Internet Explorer. IE does not show PNG images with transparancy properly. I use Firefox for my browser so i was unaware of the problem. I will fix the image so it looks right ASAP. Iain 04:33, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chris, welcome back to the project. You know, you never really left-;) I'm very glad you are officially back and am always glad to work with you. And yes, Wiki is very frustrating at times, but it's also very addicting. FYI, today or tomorrow we'll list Eagle Scout (Boy Scouts of America) for FAC. Do you really think that the Camp Wolfeboro article is better off as a note inserted into the Scouting in California article, rather than standing by itself? (I suppose the same question applies to a lot of the other substantial entries on various camps run by the different CA councils.) The Scouting in California article is already quite lengthy, and could probably benefit from a bit of trimming-up. Anyhow, I am curious why you have made this move. Scouting in Connecticut

Hello Rlevse,

Thank you for the input. I've corrected them. I have a question for you on the format. Most Scouting in articles contain very little regarding past councils, camps and lodges. The suggested format that you list the council and include the camp and lodge makes sense until you hit Connecticut where I think I found every council, every camp and every lodge. Does it make sense to list the three as I did or combine the three together. If combined, Camp Sequassen could be listed under 4 councils and where would the history go? To the last council? I've asked other folks, on an informal basis for their suggestions but received nothing back. I have more info to add, hopefully over the next several weeks. Any suggestion would be helpful.--dep369 23:30, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Dep369[reply]

I'm referring this to Chris, who deals with this area more than I. Rlevse 00:18, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chris, this has been discussed before. The former is about the UK only. The latter is an international article about this section. When proposing a merge, could you use "mergeto" and "mergefrom" tags rather than just "merge" tags as this indicates clearly which is to become the redirect and which the main article. It also directs the debate to one talk page, not to both which is confusing. I'm opposed to a merge, but if you change the tags and give some clear reasons on the appropriate talk page I'll reconsider. Cheers, Brian. --Bduke 08:04, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What did you merge this into? I want to look before I afd it. Rlevse 00:53, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Scouting in Ontario (chris)
I too thought of putting this to AfD but I have chnaged my mind. It needs to be a redirect to Scouting in Ontario as people will look for 129th Toronto Scouting Group and Queer Scouts which redirects there. Of course, AfD might lead to a redirect, but I do not thing we can rely on it. We need to ask again on the talk page for the merge to be confirmed and it becoming a redirect. --Bduke 01:05, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I JUST put a db on it, but after I saw this, I redirected it. GEEZ we're all on at the same time!Rlevse 01:08, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
agreed, redirect is better, thanks.--Chris 01:09, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS: on the assessments, if you look you'll see some were moved from mid to high and the TOPs were increased from 9 to 42 yesterday, so it's not all one way. Rlevse 01:11, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Chris, when you merge an article, the project rating on the talk page of what is now a redirect needs changed to non-article status. If you don't know how to do this, let me know when you merge and I'll do it. Rlevse 18:59, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I currently have a bot run underway tagging all living persons talk pages with the project template (Special:Contributions/Kingbotk) so you don't need to tag any manually. However, if you want to tag any manually please ensure that, if the person is still alive, you add the "living=yes" parameter, e.g. {{WPBiography|living=yes}}. My bot run isn't clever enough to modify existing templates, so if it finds a WPBiography template on a talk page it will skip it. No reply needed. Cheers. --kingboyk 23:34, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kun Musta'idan x20

What's the point in duplicating exactly the same paragraph in 20 articles? Also, whoever cares what's the Arabic translation for "Be Prepared", will of course look in that article, and not in Sahraoui Scout Association.

And what's the point in providing the Arabic translation of the word "boyscout"? This is not a dictionary. --tyomitch 15:25, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A more constructive solution would be to move the paragraph to WOSM-Arab Region. The paragraph is equally relevant to all the members of the Region, and its article is already linked from all the members' articles. Is that good enough? --tyomitch 17:10, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have to disagree about putting it in the region article. Each association should have its own info. But I also agree a little variety would be good. I suggest leaving the info in the association articles and varying the text in each some.Rlevse 23:55, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Tyomitch, I truly appreciate your energy, but that suggestion is actually not "good enough". First, it goes against the format of the 160+ other national articles;
ORLY? Asociación de Guías y Scouts de Chile (picked totally at random) doesn't give the Spanish translation of the motto. Organizatsia Na Bulgarskite Skauty (picked randomly again) doesn't either.
second, the Scout Motto is not specific nor particularly pertainant to the Arab Scout Region;
The Scout Motto isn't, but the Arabic translation is.
and third, the removals do not give the reader which languages or variants are used in that particular country.
A reader can navigate to Western Sahara and read in the infobox at the very top that the official language there is Arabic.
Please leave them as they are. Besides, there has been some discussion about dividing up or renaming Be Prepared, as it is too much a catchall to be of use to most. We very much appreciate your contributions, but unless you'd like to join the Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting, we'd prefer to let those with some connection to the topic be the arbiters of what is noteworthy in each article.
IMO it isn't a question of noteworthiness, but that of general style. I am not personally connected to the Scouting, and being an independent reader, it just struck my eye to see 20 repetitions of the same paragraph in every article.
Now, if you _do_ want to add the Arabic to the Scout articles for Palestine and Syria, we would really appreciate your contribution (and thanks for the ones you did already, that's a lot of work). In thanks, Chris 01:51, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, and the Iraqi one. I will do that as soon as I have some free time again. --tyomitch 06:51, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

and to find how Emperor Hirohito, Viscount Makoto Saito and General Maresuke Nogi are related to Scouting through the Japanese Wikipedia.

I do so appreciate your help, Chris 02:25, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here you go:
Akizuki Satsuo (秋月左都夫)
After observing a British Boy Scout event in 1908, he reported his findings to others in Japan, paving the way for the Boy Scouts to be set up there. (Note: Name order is Surname-Given name because he was born before Meiji 1 (1868).)
Takehiko Kurushima (久留島武彦, Kurushima Takehiko)
Participated in the 2nd World Scout Jamboree in Denmark. Author of youth literature and winner of of the "Nihon no Andersen" award for his nursery rhyme "Yūyake Koyake". One of the founding pioneers of the scouting movement in Japan.
Hiroshi Koshiba (小柴博, Koshiba Hiroshi)
Author of Tokyo Shonengun. Participated in a discussion in 1913 with Japan's ambassador to Russia Ichirō Motono, were Motono explained all about the Boy Scout principles and organization in Europe. Koshiba was suitably impressed and decided to follow them. Participated in the 1st World Scout Jamboree in 1920 in England. Helped reorganize the Shūyodan Yonenbu into the Nihon Kenjidan with Shimoda (below) in 1921. He died of a sudden heart attack on June 19, 1925.
Tsuneha Sano (佐野常羽, Sano Tsuneha)
Attended the 2nd World Scout Jamboree in Denmark and the 3rd World Scout Jamboree in the United Kingdom. Received the Silver Wolf award from Lord Baden-Powell in 1931. The only other person to receive the Silver Wolf in Japan was the Emperor Showa. Given the title of "Elder" by the National Scouting Association of Japan in 1954. Given the highest award of the NSAJ, the "Kijishō", in 1955. He died in 1956.
Toyomatsu Shimoda (下田豊松, Shimoda Toyomatsu)
Author of Hokkaido Iwanai Shonendan. Participated in the 1st World Scout Jamboree in 1920 in England. Established the Nihon Kenjidan (translates to something like "Japan Stalwart Youth Troop") in 1921. Was Japan's first "Chief Scout."
Hōjō Tokiyuki (北条時敬)
Principal of Hiroshima Regular High School. After returning from attending a worldwide morality conference in 1908 where he conducted a survey of the British scouting organization, he returned to Japan and gave lectures on it in Hiroshima and other places. (Note: Name order is Surname-Given name because he was born before Meiji 1 (1868).)
Michiharu Mishima (三島通陽, Mishima Michiharu)
Held a scouting exhibition in February 1946, the first since the end of WWII. The National Boy Scout Alliance of Japan is founded in 1947, and Mishima is the first president.
Hope that helps. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 05:51, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Brother, Randy says you can help me on this-this guy really wants to delete my recent additions for illustration-Image:LaszlonagyU.jpg‎, Image:Laszlonagycarlgusta.jpg‎; and Image:BoyScoutsofNippon.jpg, please help me save them from him. I hate having to do this all the time. Chris 23:49, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hey, i'm sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you. going thru the history of these image descriptions, I can't see that User:Carnildo has done anything wrong in disputing the fair use rationale you gave for these images.
Image:LaszlonagyU.jpg - it looks like it might be sorted out, but weakly. Promotional items include a very limited set of images, but since you claim it's from a press kit, OK - I won't argue. {{promotionalphoto}} is a an utter nightmare - it's tag that is misused 99% of the time, so he was right to be wary without evidence to the contrary. Remember that images need to be sourced, which is something you didn't do, and they need a rationale, which still hasn't been done very well.
Image:Laszlonagycarlgusta.jpg‎ - i'm not sure what you're referring to here.
Image:BoyScoutsofNippon.jpg - i'm guessing that this is from the same press kit you were talking about earlier? OK, but I can't the fair use justification. this image isn't illustrating any historically significant events, individuals, etc., so there's no reason not to find a use a free image. i'd support this image's deletion from Wikipedia, though I'd rather not bother you about it at the moment. a majority of the time, i find that the {{fairusein}} is frequently misused and often just forces a very, very weak rationale onto an image, because no real rationale works.
Continually referencing the Copyright Act of 1976 isn't going to get you anywhere, either. Carnildo knows all of the ins and outs of image use on Wikipedia, and he certainly understands how fair use works. But you're working within Wikipedia, and I, along with many others, like it when we make efforts to keep things free, even if it takes a bit more work. i suppose it pisses a lot of people off, especially because there is a fundamental misunderstanding of copyright among most people, but hey. — Rebelguys2 talk 17:50, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If Image:LaszlonagyU.jpg is indeed a photo from a press kit like you said, then {{promotional}} is the correct tag. Since the source is cited (WOSM), it's OK for our purposes - though obviously not ideal. Unfortunately, I see no reasonable fair use rationale for Image:BoyScoutsofNippon.jpg. — Rebelguys2 talk 23:25, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
