Cape Emine is the easternmost point of Bulgaria. It is located 49 miles south of Varna, 34 miles north of Bourgas and 9 miles south of Obzor. It is the end of Stara Planina mountain and is the Bulgaria’s stormiest cape. In the Middle Ages on Cape Emine there was a fortress called Emona. Its name was derived from Aemon, the ancient name for Stara Planina mountain. Nowadays, only some ruins of the fortress are left. There are also a lighthouse and remnants of a monastery. Village of Emona is located nearby. It is famous as the birthplace of the Thracian king Rez who fought in the Thracian war and was killed by Odysseus and Diomedus according to Homer’s Iliad.
