Birchwood is a village located in Washburn County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 518. The village is located within the Town of Birchwood.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²). 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 12.50% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 518 people, 227 households, and 142 families residing in the village. The population density is 177.0/km² (459.7/mi²). There are 269 housing units at an average density of 91.9 persons/km² (238.7 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.33% White, 0.00% African American, 1.54% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.74% from two or more races. 2.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 227 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 37.4% are non-families. 33.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the village the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 98.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.2 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $23,636, and the median income for a family is $35,795. Males have a median income of $22,000 versus $19,091 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,237. 11.9% of the population and 4.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.4% are under the age of 18 and 8.2% are 65 or older.
